Wow the news footage showing huge waves coming on shore near Sendai causing massive damage! The Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture area has been hit really hard. News footage is showing Sendai airport underwater and people on the roof waving for help. Nikon's Sendai plant is very close to the airport.
Thoughts and Prayers to the people of Japan.

Watching the CNN and Al Jazeera news feed.
Crazy stuff. You can see cars trying to out run the wave and then get swallowed up.

This is a very dark day for Japan.

I was just about to go to sleep, been up for almost 2 hours just watching it all.

Yes, half of my family are in Japan, but further south. When my wife gets back from work (I've not been able to get ahold of her), we are going to hunker down on the phone and in prayer.

It was a really slow rolling earthquake here in Osaka. I felt like I was going to faint and felt dizzy. I didn’t realise it was an earthquake until someone rang us up to ask if the kids are OK. Everyone who felt it here seemed to think they were just feeling a bit dizzy, it was strange.
As for other areas, it doesn’t look so good. No reported dead so far, but injuries reported and the tsunami may have washed so people away.
Hope no one was killed.

Good to know you're alright Gareth.
Watching those huge waves roll across the Sendai area is just horrible!

Hope that all was over already.. and that no NR was hit, and condolences for all the people who suffered from this catastrophic event.

There is a tsunami alert for British-Columbia and USA west coast.
News are reporting an emergency situation in a nuclear power plan near Sendai. They just declared a nuclear emergency.
Cars being tossed like toys is just terrible. This one is going to hurt.

Ouch! Stay safe to everyone on the Pac Rim ...

I was near the center of the 6.8 Northridge quake (maybe low 7's), but an 8.8 is almost unimaginably huge. The aftershocks alone will be big quakes. My concern and hopes for the best go out to everyone.

Yes Gareth glad your alright and I hope shigzeo that your loves ones are fine as well. What a terrible story this has been. I've been watching it all day. I have heard that 200-300 people are dead in the port city Sendai alone! A very sad day...

Oh my God. Prayers go out to all of Japan! I hope this just looks worse than it really is.

There are some incredible photos online at the New York Times web site ... the first few made my jaw drop... terrible damage! The BBC is just reporting that Wakaiashi ward in Sendai has "hundreds dead"...
All very sad. My sympathy to all - especially NR members - there.
