My wife is using a D60 with the kit lens. I have the opportunity to purchase a AF-S VR 24-120mm lens for $350.00 new. I know that this lens has had numerous negative reviews about it being soft, but my questions are as follows:
1. Has anyone used it on a DX body with any success?
2. Does using the center of the lens on a DX body help with the softness?
3. Any other thoughts that you may have?
In all honesty, the 18-55 is a MUCH better lens in general. Alot sharper around the edges, and across the frame.
The lens would not give you any value, being both soft and 36 - 180 cropped mm. Spend your money on either a better wide angle zoom lens, Maybe 16-85 VR or more zoom like the 55-200 VR, anyway just my thoughts

I used to have this zoom and used it both on film and dx and never had any problems with it. Apart from beeing a little bit dark it's IMHO a very good lens and vr works really good.
For less money, you could get the 55-200 lens which picks up where your kit lens lets off and get more zoom range (between the two), better sharpness, and still use the excellent 18-55. The downside of course is that you have to switch between two lenses.
If you want a one lens for every situation solution, the slightly more expensive 18-200 is a much better option in my opinion. You could sell your 18-55 to help fund the difference.

24-120 AF-S VR is actually perfect lens for D60 IMHO (36-180 FX equivalent is all most people ever need from a camera).
As for reviews IQ is not as good as 24-85 it was compared to at a time but is good enough for an average use (you will certainly not have an issue with image corners on DX) and is much more useful overall then 24-85 or 18-55 so I would definitely recommend it, especially for the price you have mentioned.

I want to thank all of you for your advice. What has happened is I have taken a while to decide to buy it from my brother-in-law, he has now offered it to me for $300.00 so I bought it.
I do not see how I can go wrong for $300.00.
