Check with the store when you buy your stuff to be sure (and read the card to see what it says), but in general, I've been told not to worry about the cards. You just need to have the proof of purchase.

In my experience, it helps when you speak to Nikon on the phone if they are looking at your gear on their screen (serial numbers etc) so I always go straight there when I get new gear.

In the UK if you register within 30 days of purchase, you'll get an extra years warranty on camera bodies and kits. (Unlike the US we only get 12 months as standard). There is no need for the card to be filled in here.

On lenses I thought you get an extra 4 years of warranty if you submit the card within 1 week of purchase?
What happens if I was late by a week or two?
