    Nikon SU-800 Three-Speedlight Test Image:

    Nikon D7000; AF DC-Nikkor 105mm f/2.0D

I just ran out and bought two new SB-600s, and set them up to complement my SB-800, which was used as the primary key (bounced). The SB-600s are used as a kick and as a background special. The SU-800 made this a super easy set-up:

    1. SB-800: assigned to group 'A' at 0.0 EV, bounced into 30" x 50" Foamcore.
    2. SB-600: assigned to group 'B' at -0.7 EV with daylight hard gel.
    3. SB-600: assigned to group 'C' at -0.7 EV direct, w/diffuser.

Looks like your model is squinting because of the preflashes.

Any tips to stop that from happening?

I find it's worse with some people than with others (I'm new to strobe work).

The SU-800 doesn't emit a visible pre-flash. But the slaved Speedlights apparently do!

If the key isn't directly in your subject's eyeline, it's much less likely to happen. Also, the more you shoot, the more they should get used to it. I don't think she was reacting to the pre-flash (the key is almost 90-degrees oblique to her eyeline)--she's just sleepy.

Here's one with the three-quarter kick dialed down to -1.3 EV:

Here's one with no kick, just a hair light:

The D90 does have CLS commander capability via its pop-up flash, but you would have to download an SB-900 user manual to see if it mentions such a possibility. If the repeating effect can be "set" on the SB-900, while still in REMOTE mode, it may be able to be triggered via CLS, but I don't know (I don't own an SB-900). The only way to find out may be to try it at your local Nikon dealer (or contact Nikon by phone).

My shoot with the professional model got pushed back. Hopefully, I'll have a chance to shoot some SU-800 inspired images of her this coming weekend. I just bought two more SB-600s last night ($219 at Best Buy, less 10% coupon = only $197 each!)--I now own four SB-600s! Now, I'm still trying to find one more SB-800, since I need at least two to bounce into a full 4' x 8' sheet of Foamcore . . .

I have an SU-800, SB-900 and five SB-800. To eliminate blinking by the subject use FV LOCK, Flash Value Lock. This sends out the pre-flashes first and remembers the value of the flash output. When the shutter is released there is no pre-flash and no blinking.

Another use for the SU-800 is focus assist in very dark areas. The AF Assist Illuminator on the SU-800 will help with focus without emitting a flash.
