What to do..(D7000 Or D700 With Kit Or Pro Lenses)

Hey Everyone,

I've been using the D7000 ever since it was released, this is my first camera and this is my setup.

Body: Nikon D7000
Glasses: Nikon 10-24mm, Nikon 18-105, Nikon 70-200mm VRII.

So now I am in a dilemma. I have a problem with my hobbies, i always want the best of everything. After buying the 70-200mm it made me want to get the 24-70mm and 14-24 and also get rid of my D7000 and get the D700 to go full frame. I always jump the gun. But photography is a hobby that I always wanted to get into and evolve in.

I haven't been shooting much and want to develop my skills and so i've been reading a lot of posts on this forum and majority of the people say to practice with the kit lens and once the user out grows it then go get new glass.

So should i wait to get the Nikon 24-70mm? I wanted it before leaving the country for travel but now i am debating if i really need that glass and use the kit lens as my walk around lens.. or should i sell my 70-200 VRII and get the 24-70mm?

Photography gear needs are normally driven by the kinds of photography you do.

That's quite different motivation from 'buying the best'.

My input would be, if your 70-200mm VR II top of the line zoom is gathering dust because you never use it, ditch it.

If most of your shooting is done in the 24-70mm range and you don't like primes, then get the 24-70, it is by all accounts a great mid-range zoom.

If you buy the best for the sake of having it, I don't have any input, because it wouldn't matter. Knock yourself out.

My advice is STEP AWAY FROM THE NR FORUM.

Use what you've got then when you know what you want and what is wrong with what you've got (by using it), then make whatever changes are necessary.

But really, if you haven't got a D3X and the holy tinities, you haven't got anything.

elvishefer: I love shooting landscape and architecture but i consider myself and all around shooter. I like to shoot cars, sports, my family. Thats why I decided to go with 10-24 for lanscape, 24-70 for everyday shooting (family/cars/walk around), 70-200 (sports/animals/concerts/ or hard to "reach" areas :)). I dont do photography for a living but wouldnt mind doing it on the side but thats not till waaaaay later.

You really can't define the "best" equipment. Depending on what you do, there will always be one set of equipment that is better than everything else, but will be far worse than everything else at something else.

For instance, if using the D7000 just reminds you that the D700 is better, then you have to consider whether you'd rather have a D3s, or a D3x, both of which are better than the D700 in their own ways. Or maybe you wouldn't be satisfied with anything less than a top end MFDB system. Or maybe a large format or medium format panoramic system would be what you really want.

Personally, I'd say to keep what you have until you absolutely know why you want something else. If the only reason you want the 24-70 is because some people say it's "better", you should beware- you might actually like it less, since it's much bigger and heavier than the 18-105 you already have, doesn't go as wide (24 is really more of a normal fov on dx), and in daylight is optically the same, since you are stopping down a lot to get depth of field. Perhaps a 17-55 would be better if you want a normal 2.8 lens, but then you lose out on the long end. Or if you really want something for low light normal shooting, you might want to consider the 35 or 50 1.8 primes (which are very good and very cheap lenses for what they are), or any of the 1.4 primes.

But looking at what you already have, I see no reason why you couldn't do almost anything with that.

Hi RAW,

I think you have a good kit.

You _might_ go for the most inexpensive 50mm f1.8 _or_ a 35mm f1.8 to add a 'look' to your shooting.

Thom Hogan has some comments on his website about upgrading equipment with which I quite agree. One should upgrade skills first. Have fun with the camera and when you feel that you can really, really get much more out of something, go for it.

I think there are enough discussions on FX versus DX bodies and kit versus pro lenses that we don't need to start another thread on this. The fact that you are unsure of what you need makes me believe you should keep your D7000 and just learn to use it regardless of the glass you buy.

Throwing my two cents in ... I wholeheartedly agree with spend more time shooting (even if it's junk photos) to get familiar with your equipment and to play around.

You do realize how much the holy trinity weighs, don't you? That's a lot to lug around.

With what you already have, for your upcoming trip, I'd stick with what you have, or you may just want to add the 35mm f1.8 (and leave the kit lense at home). It's inexpensive and is a sweet lens (and is very light weight).
