Ok, so I've got some money saved for the D800, I already own a 50mm 1.4 and I plan on buying a 20mm 2.8. I'd like to cover the more telephoto range in my lenses so I'm thinking about buying the 85mm 1.8. I would love the 1.4, but it's way too expensive for me. Does anyone here have any experience with this lens? Is it any good?

The 85/1.8 is a very good lens, and compares well to the 85/1.4 (any model) that costs 3 times as much. Optically, they perform nearly identically at the same apertures; you are paying the extra $1000 for the 2/3 of a stop (although to be fair, when it is dark you will want every stop you can get). Ergonomically, the lenses are nearly identical, although the 1.4G obvious has easier manual focus override.

Hi,
Agree. I have the 1.8 and use it a lot. The 2/3d or or 1/3, I'm not sure which is something I'm not missing for the amount I'm not paying.

I picked up a used mint 85mm a few months ago, here are some of my pics. I find it quite sharp and performed above my expectations.

regulator75, the DOF control on the 3rd shot is fantastic, creamy.
lovely dog.Mike: that is sharp, nice , the hair on his hand stands out. great shot, jumps out of the background at you, nice at 1.8, SB900 looks natural.

These pictures are awesome. What about quality of bokeh compared to 1.4s?

If possible, someone with the 1.4 should post some identical pics at 1.4 and 1.8
light gathering ability is obvious, but i'm curious as to how different the DOF looks.

Nikon D90
AF Nikkor 85mm f/1.8 @ f/1.8Both images have nearly the same subject-to-camera distance (the photo of the girl is several inches closer), but the image of the girl above is a bit misleading--the background is fairly far away; perhaps 250' or more. Whereas, in the image shown below, the photo was taken inside a camera store, and the background is only about 20' away.

Close-up, of course, it's easy to blur your background with the 85mm f/1.8:

Nikon D90
AF Nikkor 85mm f/1.8 @ f/1.8
Nikon D90
AF Nikkor 85mm f/1.8 @ f/1.8But, focus a bit farther away, with a background just several feet behind your subject, and out-of-focus blur becomes a bit more elusive.

Bokeh is subjective but I think Regulator75 images show well that it is round diaphragm not hexagon. There are enough examples here for you to judge.
Note that Bokeh is better on FF than on DX.
