I won't post ALL of my wishlist items, but the main ones are:
Nikkor 70-200 VRIGo for it, Pad! I bought a 70-200mm VR I refurb and I love it! No wonder everyone loves this lens. It really is sharp as heck. And, with the VR I, you get the longer focal lenght at close-focus. Keep checking for refurbs. The VR I versions are still trickling into refurb stock, and sometimes sell at a HUGE discount.

. . . And, Nikon STILL has not announced an 80-400 upgrade/replacement. Every day I ask my Magic Eight Ball if Nikon is gonna come thru for me any time soon, and every day the answers are the same... "Outlook Not So Good," "Better Not Tell You Now," "Ask Again Later." Arrggghh.I played the wait-for-Nikon-to-upgrade-the-AF 80-400mm VR-zoom game too . . . for like a month. It didn't last long, and when I found an 80-400mm refurb at a great price, I jumped. That was almost a year ago, and I've been enjoying the crap outta this "outdated" lens for months now. Even if Nikon does upgrade the lens, it could end up costing much more, once "revised."
Although the NR blog did recently report on another "200-500mm" lens rumor (link, below), I say, go for it now. It's really not that expensive for such a long VR-ized lens, especially if you can locate a refurb copy. Plus, I was really surprised at how sharp the 80-400mm actually is--it's truly impressive. While some really get a lot out of the 300mm f/4.0 + TC route, I really wanted a VR telephoto. Also, the fact that most every other viable option with that kind of reach is still thousands more, really sold me.

Hi,
And knee pads to stay in my bag (try them if you haven't). I have some, but have forgotten them on occasion.
They make a difference.
My best,

I am thinking about "updating" my current AI-S lenses to AF versions - I'm not getting any younger. But the Holy Zoom Trinity and the Holy Primes Trinity are completely out of reach. So my shopping list is:
Silver Efex Pro
ND filters
AF-D 35 mm f/2
AF-D 85 mm f/1.8
SB-600
AF-D 50 mm f/1.8
AF-D 20 mm f/2.8Posted 2 years ago # -
First on my list is the 24-70 2.8
Then later maybe the 50 1.4G. My 50 1.8D is too soft wide open.
Someday I'll probably get the 70-200 and 14-24, but I don't do a lot of really wide or really long shots so neither of those is high on my list right now...though I'd get the 70-200 first.

AF-D 20 mm f/2.8I like where you're going with that list! Sounds like an excellent array of great glass! With that budget, I'd likely buy the EXACT same set of lenses that you've selected. Great minds think alike!

Yes, I really like the primes. They are fast, compact and not very heavy. I admit that the last time I looked into zooms is about 15 years ago and back then the IQ was visibly different from what I got from the primes (there were probably zooms with comparable IQ but again out of my budget). I know that since then large improvements have been made, but still, if you want a fast zoom with good IQ there is a lot of glass that you have to carry around. But then again, you wallet is much lighter, so this might be in balance...
One of my favorite primes is the AI-S 28 mm f/2.8 but from what I read (KR) this is much better than the AF version. Anyone any experience with these two?
For the others I want to start doing my own tests to see if the IQ is comparable.

Do you mean for DX, or for FX? The 28mm is nice on FX, but a little weird for DX (42mm-equivalent). My very first film SLR set-up was: 28mm, 50mm, 85mm. But, when I switched to Nikon, I changed to: 24mm, 35mm, 50mm, 85mm--I then developed a great affinity for the 24mm on full-frame bodies. Haven't really shot at 28mm in years. By the way, are you shopping lenses for a DX or FX body?
I think the 28mm f/2.8 may be the only short Nikkor AI-S prime I don't own. I only have the AF 28mm f/2.8D (or, is it the other way around?). Anywho, I only have one version, so I'm sorry, but I can't offer a comparison (I also apparently don't shoot with it much, since I can't even remember which one I have). Since I'm still DX, I reach for my AF Nikkor 20mm f/2.8 first, when a wide-angle prime is called for. Wait, that's no longer true, because I broke it (I still have a 20mm AI-S, though). I now have the AF Nikkor 18mm f/2.8D. But, I don't recommend it. Ken Rockwell says the 18mm Nikkor is soft--and, damnit, he's RIGHT! (I read his article AFTER I bought it).
I do know that the AF Nikkor 35mm f/2.0D also has a history of being a bit soft wide-open (just ask Ken Rockwell). Unfortunately, I have to agree. Damnit! He was right, AGAIN! My AF Nikkor 35mm f/2.0D is a tad soft wide open, but I bought that lens, I think, before they even invented the internet. Unfortunately, the 35mm f/2.0 is kinda the only option anywhere near that price range in an AF Nikkor. Maybe you'll get a sharper copy than mine. I wouldn't want to discourage you from getting the 35mm f/2.0D, since it's an incredibly useful focal length for both DX and FX.

By the way, are you shopping lenses for a DX or FX body? For FX. I went digital from an FM3a only a few months ago and one of the reasons for getting the D700 over the D7000 (or something similar) was, that the 28 mm and the 20 mm are my two favourite lenses and I wanted to keep them. My current AI-S lineup are the 20 mm f/2.8, 28 mm f/2.8, 35 mm f/2, 50 mm f/1.4, 85 mm f/2, 105 mm f/2.5 and the 200 mm f/4 Micro (which I hardly use). Very good lenses and basically I am happy with them. But since I got the possiblity now I sometimes would like to have AF as well (I currently havn't got a single AF lens). So this is more of a luxury problem.

I have been looking out for a 28mm for my DX cameras. it may seem a bit weird but its a FOV that once you have discovered you will be changed by it. Its a amazing FOV for intimate portraits and cozy gatherings. Images where precious memories are captured. I am still looking .. sigh. Maybe I will just crop the 24mm.. sigh its not quite the same though...

Waiting for Nikon to announced the so-far mythical "d5100" and/or the new EVIL so I can decide which one I want for an upgrade. I have a d40 and just want to see the new generation before deciding on the d7K, d5100 (assuming that's what they call it), or EVIL if it has good ergonomics, such as an electronic viewfinder. I also plan on adding an SB-400 and maybe the 35mm as well.

I have been looking out for a 28mm for my DX cameras. The 28 AF-D doesn't have CRC (close range correction) and is about at the bottom of the barrel as far as currently shipping technology. Is the one stop improvement in speed over the 18-xxx kit lenses what attracts you, or the size, or ??? In my experience it is softer at f/4 than just about any of the modern zooms. I quickly sold mine and got the 24, and consider that price delta some of the best Nikon money I ever spent.

Picking up real soon
MB-D11
and 50mm AF-D f/1.8
Is it redundant to get it if I have the 35mm?
That or just get the Tokina 11-16
It's going to be a hard decision to make when I step into that camera store next week

What would be perfect for me would be a small high IQ 27mm F1.8 DX lense. but no one will be producing that soon :-(

I'm quite happy with my gear right now.
D90 - gripped
Tokina 11-16mm
Tamron 90mm
Nikkor 18-200
Nikkor 35mm, 50mm and 85mm f/1.8I might upgrade my Tamron 90mm macro for the Nikkor 105mm macro.
Also a small chance that I'll update the D90 to the D800.
I stand corrected, just picked up a new SB-700 today! :)

18-20 MP FF D700 type body is my next purchase. I will use my D90 until something like that comes out. 16MP won't make me upgrade. A D3 body style won't get me to upgrade.
I am considering a TC for my 70-200, just not certain if I want the 1.4 or 1.7TC
