Just changed up from a D5000 to a D90 with all those lovely quick access buttons and so I am keen to know what more experienced users use the Fn button for?
I did a search and even asked Niko where the other thread went but no luck either way.

Maybe not a more experienced user but i use them for bracketing & flash control!
Flash on/off (hold for off).
With a 70-200 or long it is nice to set for ISO, then you can keep your left hand on the lens.
If your metering is set to matrix , assigning the button to spot metering helps in tricky light situations - without taking your eye off the visor . If you already use spot metering all the time , then I don't know :-)
On my D700, strobe flash, (can't remember the correct term). On my D3s it shows the artificial horizon in the viewfinder. Interesting question spraynpray, and one that I would think Nikon would be very interested to know? By the way, I don't believe a word you said about Niko, he can find a thread ANYWHERE! :-)
Good question.
I have it set for my Artificial Horizon too.
on d3s - change the crop size from FF to DX
on d300s - bracketing control
d90 - af mode selection (whoops)
d300s - bracketing control

I have it set for artificial horizon also!
And I thought it was only me with wonky eyes :-)

Now I like that idea adamz. Is it via the top option in my menu, or is there a way of changing it only while the button is held down? I normally just go to "my menu", but a one button one shot solution would be great!
i have a d700 and can't imagine ever shooting in crop on it.
I have a D7000 so, in M I switch between Spot Meter, Non-CPU lenses or Artificial Horizon depending on what I'll be shooting.
My U1 has it set to AE Lock since I use my AE/AF Lock button as AF ON
My U2 has it set to Artificial Horizon
I know that doesn't really help since the D90 has none of what I just listed, but when I had my D90, I just made it display the grid.

That great if you've got the money for a 400/500/600mm, but I don't, until I do i'll have to keep relying on my 70-300 in DX crop mode, to get my 450mm equivalent shots!
i understand cropping, but not crop mode, id much rather do it in post. i listened to good old ken and invested in glass, though god knows id love a d3s.
I have it set to the top item in My Menu (Auto-ISO), but since I have a D7000 I can't set it to select ISO. Don't know what Nikon was thinking when they put the metering button on top instead of the ISO... >_> Hopefully Nikon will put that in another firmware update or something.
Hi,
For the D90
Beep on/off - use it to turn on the beep in crowds, but I like the beep to alert me that the focus is working - love/hate thing.
Exposure Delay mode (Mirror up) - use it for long exposures.
Commander Mode - use it all the time.
White Balance - don't use it much
Easy Exposure Compensation on/off (P Mode) - I hardly use it - rarely use program mode.
My best,
Mike

You have to hold the button

If I wanted to shoot DX, I would have bought a D300.
I have both, but unfortunately not always can carry both of them with me, and sometimes the crop is nice, especially the 5/4 for portrait images.
That's interesting adamz. Do you remember how to set it up? I dont mean how to assign the function button, I obviously know how to do that, but how did you assign it to that feature? I don't remember seeing that option in the list.
On the D40 I set it to ISO.
Sometimes I change it to self timer, 2 seconds. When I had slower lenses in a museum, I would set the self timer on, pull the strap tight against my body (with the camera around my neck) and use it as a bipod.
Works pretty well.
D300 -> Spot metering
D3100 -> ISO
On the D7000: The AE-L/AF-L button is set to "AE lock (hold)," and the Fn button is set to spot meter, so I can instantly grab a reading from anywhere, no matter what exposure mode or shooting mode I'm in.

menu->pencil->f (controls)->f4 (assign Fn button->Fn button + command dials->Choose image area
You can assign only FN button + command dials or Fn button press, can't assign both of them.

A man after my own heart. A great combo.
On a slightly tangential note: anyone know why AE-l/AF-L defaults to locking both? Isn't that redundant when the shutter half-press locks as well? Always seemed like a wasted button, but I'm more than happy to hear what I could be doing which I'm not.

No kidding. 5:4 in-camera would be great, IF the sides of the viewfinder blacked out. I like the safety of being able to push that 5:4 framing a little left or right in post.
Unless you're shooting for FPS, DX crop mode seems silly. Double silly if you're shooting it for a supposed 1.5x TC.
You must log in to post.
