Could be, but I doubt it. CLS isn't reliable enough outdoors for that kind of photography, at least from the testing that I've done.

Right. IR doesn't work to well in daylight in my experience as well.

I would say that the preflashes would add too much time lag between pressing the shutter and getting your exposure. Most likely something like this is done with optical or wireless slaves.

No way to tell, since the designs are very similar, and we cannot see the the name plate or any other parts of the body that would give us any hints.

I remember a guy who photographed bugs in flight who jury rigged his own flash equipment.
Someone posted about him on this forum, I forgot what the thread was.
Perhaps they're the same guy, he didn't use CLS.
