Hi Everyone,

I am a pro wedding photographer and a Nikon shooter from the get go...I have my D3S and 2 D3's...if I didn't know any better I am beginning to think its coolpix for bust for Nikon...its been almost 2 years since the D3S...are they going to at some point focus on us the professionals or is it the consumer...we all have to make money so I get it...but its starting to concern me that we really don't see anything but a few lenses heading in the pros direction...I read this column a lot and its starting to frustrate me because I believe in Nikon and I would like to see them continue an amazing path in the pro area...I welcome any other vents or thoughts...

Anybody feel free to correct me, but I believe the general consensus is that we'll see something spectacular within the next 6-9 months with the introduction of the D4, D400, and D800.

This question comes up in about every thread... However I think that this is the year nikon will pack a punch in the pro field... Are you planning of ditching nikon anytime soon?

No company can update their pro line every year- the economics just don't make sense. And if they did, the changes would be so small that we would be complaining about that. I think it's reasonable to expect that no pro bodies would come out last year, while we should expect to see a new flagship this year- Nikon has been on a 4 year cycle for the past few bodies, and it should be on track to continue this, barring some major catastrophe.

If I were a pro , I would be thankful that nothing new is coming out every year otherwise I would constantly be spending money on upgrades .

Having not bought the D3x , you are definitely not after the megapixels so what is it that you expect to see in a new pro Nikon ? Do you really need anything better than D3x ?

The D3s was introduced just 14 months ago . It took Nikon 45 years to go from Nikon F to F6 .

I think that nikon does support their pros.

Nikon got a few of amazing lenses for pros this year. If you look at the average cycle of Nikon bodies you'll see that the expected D4 is scheduled about exactly a year and 9 months of the D3s announcement in october of 09. The D4 is suspected either spring or summer of this year. It takes a lot more resources for nikon to create a new $5000 dollar DSLR then a $200$ Coolpix camera. I wouldn't want to see a D Series camera released every 6 months to have 1 better feature or 2 or 4 more megapixels.

What are you looking for that nikon isn't providing you're certain needs. If you have a problem with the current direction of nikon then theres canon, olympus, pentax, or sony to choose from.

Hah! Good point. We are a greedy lot aren't we. Still, Nikon's rate of new product launch is controlled by Canon and vice versa. If they got together and - say - halved the frequency of new releases they may be able to reduce prices and sell far more so reducing costs. :?

Now wait a minute,....the D3X that has the ability of the D3s,......does make sense.

1080P ? If I wanted a video camera,....I would have purchased one. NEVER use the 720 in D3s.

I hope Drab is right and you're just trolling, the D3s is regarded as one of, if not the, best digital cameras you can buy...if you're having trouble covering a wedding with it perhaps a new Nikon is the least of your worries ?

Dear pclayman,

How does the lack of a Nikon D4 affect your business? Is there a particular aspect of your photography which is needlessly suffering as a result of Nikon's inaction on the D4 front? What markets do you feel you are unable to tap due to holes in the current Nikon lineup? Are these holes filled by Canon, and if so by which camera bodies?

Funny, the only pro photographers I know (a husband and wife team who's entire income is from photography) complain about how frequently Nikon updates their pro bodies. They typically skip at one upgrade (the S upgrade typically) so that the cameras are used for 3-4 years before replacement.

There is nothing that a new camera will do for them that the current ones don't already do in spades.

It seems that the big money for camera manufacturers is in the lower ended "prosumer" bodies where people often upgrade constantly as bodies improve even if it is ever so slightly. I know so many people who have gone from a D3000, to a D5000 finally to a D90 and I know they won't be stopping there. Thats big business for Nikon because thats three thousand dollars nearly in the last year and half.

I have heard various rumours that seem to suggest this should be a good year for Nikon Pro bodies although I think it is still too early for the D4 to come out yet. I have heard 30-45 MP is in store now when it does come out. Can you imagine?

its not that I don't think Nikon supports pros because they do with their service and products and its not directly going to affect my business...my question is geared toward the direction overall that Nikon is trending toward...my first digital Nikon was the D100 and as far as major upgrades to pro bodies...they've had an 18 month cycle up until this last go round which raised my question...I purchased my D3S in early 2009 if I am not mistaken...I'm certainly not ditching Nikon...way too invested plus I like the gear that I have...My business has been fortunate enough to afford the latest tools when it makes sense to have them...so I'm hoping everyone is right and this year will be an advancement...thx

You are ... It was announced in Oct 2009 and probably was not on shelves till end Nov/Dec 2009.

The Nikon D3s was released October of 09 and first one shipped was November 13th of 09 according to Nikon Rumors.

You asked for ‘any other vents or thoughts’ so here are a few suggestions:

1) Perhaps you’re asking the wrong guys, ask Nikon and tell us what they said....

2) Run a Deep Thought algorithm on the NR server and ask it the next pro-body number in hope that this number would tell us everything we want to know.

3) Accept any of the reassuring theories we throw here at random in order to pretend we really knew all along what Nikon was really up to.

4) Use astronomically corrected astrology, tea leaf readings or behavior analysis of the groundhogs and birds we take pictures of.

Seriously, do we still hope to predict Nikon intentions by identifying noise patterns in release dates and body number computations after being wrong for more than a year at it?

I am as eager for a new body as anyone here but I have to agree with many that it is only to satisfy my craving for new toys.

If I have the choice between receiving a badly conceived and buggy body now or a game-changing one later, Ill rather wait.

I have to admit, there is some educational value and fun in this guessing game.

I have a D700 and I am considering an upgrade by say May. What is it the D3s is missing so much in your opinion to make you eager for a replacement? Is it just an extra 4Meg pixel? Looks like many pros are not that happy about the D3s/D3x and I would really like to know why before a commit a purchase of either of them.

As others hinted at, if the camera is taking great pictures that are making you money then why worry? Just wait and buy the new one when it comes out. The only dilemma I can see is someone who has a broken camera and needs a new one before the new body is released.

Even with others that keep asking will the such and such body come out or should I get the body that is already out...is there really a need? Are you missing shots or having people ask you to blow pictures up to sizes that your camera isn't handling? If you can answer yes to a couple of simple questions you can decide for yourself if you need to wait or if something that is already available will work. It is all about the funds too right? If you wait you know there will be a premium for the new body. Something new is always being developed so even when you buy the newest thing out they have already started developing something better then what you have. I say everyone should be happy with what they have unless there is an obvious need for something new because of some constraint your current setup is causing you : )
