Is there is an article or any facts? All I see are speculative comments.
+1 with Jerl. What exactly are you protesting boxibear?
Most of the time people's accounts get deleted because they are promoting themselves, a product or service, or they are doing something else that is against flickr's rules. I had a friend who got his account deleted because he was selling some of his gear and was posting links in several groups.
It is well know that Thomas Hawk hates flickr. He has a vendetta against them and is always posting those kind of horror stories. A lot of times the flickr censorship issue has to do with nude images. In fact I never realized how much porn there is on flickr until I found out how to turn off the safety filter!
That does seem a bit sketchy. Did she do anything to provoke an account deletion?
It takes two to tango. The profile didn't just go "poof" and disappear for no reason. Violation of the terms of services of flickr most probably caused this.
Yeah my friend was pissed when they deleted his account but once he found out it was against the rules to sell stuff on flickr he shut up about it because it was his own damn fault. Just because he had done it lots of times before and didn't know it was against the rules didn't mean flickr was in the wrong to delete his account. A bit harsh, maybe, but you agree to play by their rules.
"What exactly are you protesting boxibear?"
I'm not protesting anything, I came across this and thought it might be of interest to those who use flickr.
+1 with Super Shooter - I have heard many part time photographers who do portraits on the side trying to bypass paying for their own site by using flickr. I have seen other link from their basic site to flickr for people to choose which photos to be printed etc.
I did receive an email from Flickr questioning some of my stuff I shot for a friend and asked to remove some comments and photos. I had 10 days to comply or to write via e-mail. If you didn't answer them, they would remove your pro account. Everyone I spoke to was very nice and within a couple of emails everything was worked out, I removed some photos/comments and never had a problem since.
From my experience, I serious doubt anyone just has their account just disappear.
Even if the user did something wrong, they are entitled to an explanation.
Even a warning first "Correct this issue"
Well, entitled is probably strong as flickr can run things as they want. "Good business practice" is probably better
^ and how do you know that didn't happen? The link isn't a good one because all it says is that an account was deleted and that's it.
I changed the title of this thread because I agree the way it's worded makes it sound like a call to action to "protest" flickr.
It would suck, though my photos are backed up on a local drive so I would not lose them. Comments and favorites are ego things that one can lose without a big problem.
Too bad we wont hear both sides of this.
I,ve been following this little tiff all over the web, and I really find it impossible to believe that her account was deleted because she posted an innocent pic of her beautiful little pug....dog that is , lol ,or some such other mundane photo, that required no special SFW tagging.....just doesn't ring true!!.. IMHO.
