I have had a weird thing happen twice now. I have exported from Lightroom a group of photos to my desktop or hard drive. The photos are all full size 300 dpi and show the full size like 8mb next to it in the file. Then when I transfer to a dvd, it reduces to like 322k.

I cannot figure out what is going on? Is it because I am deleting the photos out of lLghtroom and the original file is not there. I do not know what is going wrong with this? Once it is exported shouldn't it transfer just fine? This is causing me a myriad of problems since I cannot burn a cd because it immediately compresses. I can however upload to websites and print in the full size. Or when I drag and drop a photo to my desktop from the file it is full size.

Anybody have a clue what is happening?

    Hi,

It sounds like you shot in RAW and are exporting jpg.

I would recommend that you export to a new location and don't delete the original files.

It would also be a good practice to copy the folder of original files to another location prior to editing the files, perhaps a USB drive.

    My best,

    Mike

    which version of lightroom?

why are you "deleting the photos out of lightroom" ?

have you tried - "burn full sized jpeg " option in the export dialog box

have you tried - Edit> preferences > presets > restore export presets

I'm with the "why are you deleting files?" question. Since that is 20/20 and doesn't help at the moment and is a future reconsideration possibly.

    Either way...Need some more information"
    -windows or mac?
-burning from lightroom or from the default windows or mac application or from a third party application?
-Have you tried exporting then burning then deleting files? Does the order change what you see?

Sort of sounds like a default windows burn program which compresses the files to save space. But it gobbles up photos and turns them into mush. There maybe a setting in the burning program that is set to compress anything. If you are using a back-up software package that could do it as well. There are allot of working pieces of the puzzle there to double check.

    Mac user
I usually export a few photos to my desktop, in the file they look full size. I can upload full size, but when I drag that to a DVD it becomes 322k.

Some of you are asking why you are deleting them. I just have to put them on an external drive because my Mac Book is constantly out of space.

    What do you do?

Have you tried exporting then burning then deleting files? Does the order change what you see?
I just did try that with recent photos.
I will go in and look at my settings. This is a problem that I just started having. It happens in jpeg and raw files.

It is still not clear, at least to me , what you are doing

Running short of space on the main drive is allways bad news
so try and free up some space on the Mac Book
The Light Room catalogue must be on the main drive
but all your original files can be imported ( or moved ) to any external drive. There should be no reason to delete them
You should be able to export in any format, to any drive that has sufficient space.
Check the export and imort dialog boxes

Sounds like you burning software, not lightroom.

If you exported a full size jpeg and you can open it/upload it, then lightroom has done it's job.

Sounds like the file you are trying to burn is a shortcut or some such error. If you download a jpeg and drag that into the burning ap do you get the same probelm?

I'm with Gareth - I think it is your burning software that is compressing the files.

Are you perhaps telling your computer to make a "Photo CD"?
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Photo_CD

If so, make a Data CD, and your computer won't pretend it is smarter than you and modify your files.

I believe that it is my dvd burner on my mac- because I can drag it to a usb stick with no problem. This is crazy because it has worked for years- I am going to run all of the updates and see what the deal is.

Is it showing up on the burned dvd as 300K? When I pull folders to burn they always read as 1MB or smaller, as I believe that it is reading the thumbnail size. But as I burn it pulls the full size images.

    (No offense)
And this is what happens when one abstracts too much away from the user. They (users) fail to understand what they have where and are unable to diagnose "idiot-proof" software.

Let this be a lesson to fellow UI designers.

In that case it is NOT a hardware "burner" issue or any sort of update issue. The issue is the settings in Software - it is compressing the files by default. Apple care or Mac forums may have some details on how to change the settings or help you figure out how to burn the files without compression.

    Nice one Drab,

Pleased you made tha point. As somebody who is keenly trying to get competent with LR, CS5 and PSE whilst at the same time trying focus stacking, 360° pano and HDR software from Adobe to little applets you are supposed to just drop files on, I can tell you that what you said is music to my ears. There is no good software that is not simple and intuitive to use, it is all badly designed IMHO.

hipmom sounds like someone who is confused by all stages of the process. My only comment to you hipmom is why are you deleting files out of Lightroom, and are you sure you are, or are you just removing from the catalogue?

    I love the feedback-thanks everybody.

    In response to spraynpray
Ok I am just clicking my photo in lightroom and pushing delete once I have transferred it to an external drive. I guess I chose the wrong phrase in hasty typing. I guess I am just removing the photos from the catalogue correct?

Here is the deal- I am a photojournalist- I just have million photos I don't need each week and don't want them on my computer. I import them in lightroom, export the 6-10 photos I need for the news to a file on my desktop and email them to my editors. Tough job right?

For years, I have dragged the file from my desktop to a dvd or cd if I needed to burn it. Never had an issue

Recently this incident started happening. Each month, I go to the catalogue and delete and it asks me to delete from disk? I say yes.

I always export in 300 dpi jpeg for my editors.

I don't know how much more infomation I need to know to accomplish my task/job- so I am not completely sure (spraynpray) that I am confused by all stages of the process as stated-maybe just explaining it poorly, hoping for help from experts out there in cyberspace.
