an era ends.. never will be able to capture the world with my eyes..
still waiting for a digital slr with useable dynamic range :)Posted 2 years ago # -
Sending my first and last rolls in Monday. :)
Posted 2 years ago # -
Hi, the Kodachrome has a dynamic range of 8 stops
so buy a Nikon D700 use 14-bit processing
process the raw-files (Lightroom or Catpure NX)
use as White balance 5500 (dia film)
and you got it :-)
only the optical taste of emulsion couldn't be emulated

If you haven't already sent your Kodachrome in then good luck. There is a huge backlog at Dwanye's. I've heard of several "lost in the mail" stories. I sent my package next day air a week ago and it still hasn't been delivered! Apparently its just sitting at the UPS warehouse waiting for Dwayne's to accept delivery. I'd say Monday is the last day to mail off your film and then only if you use over night delivery. In other words be prepared to pay extravagant shipping cost. I paid close to 80 dollars and I'm still waiting for it to be delivered!
Karl, you obviously have never shot with Kodachrome before have you? There's nothing else like it.

Like alot of things in photography sometime the numbers dont tell the whole story.

niko, this scares the crap out of me. I have some very important pictures on kodachome i had to send it. Im sending it in Monday through the USPS priority mail flat rate box. From what my parents say ( their experience with USPS) that it will be there tuesday or wednesday at the most.

According to CBS news' Sunday morning program at least, while you may have rolls in the line for processing, as Kodak stopped making chemicals a while ago, the implication was that once whatever chemicals are there get used up, that's it! OUCH!!
Posted 2 years ago # -
I saw that news story. They interviewed Dwayne himself. He said they've been processing 700 rolls of film A DAY! And they only have enough chemicals for a week's run! I plan to call to find out why my film hasn't been accepted for delivery. I'm hoping it was just because Dwayne's was closed a few days for Christmas and not because they are expecting to run out of chemicals before the deadline. I've heard other photogs say they sent their film in the first week of December and their photos still haven't been sent back to them.
Smarterchild I hope you didn't shoot someone's wedding with those rolls of Kodachrome!

Wow! An end of an era. I guess now I'll try shooting some Velvia, finally.

Oh no niko, No wedding photos. It was a personal project. Around november i decided to order 5 rolls of kodachrome and i just took personal pictures of friends family and such that i want to capture on kodachrome and keep forever. 1 roll was 24 portraits of 24 different people in same pose and such and was sort of a mini project to me. My mom, dad, friends, girlfriend, influences, instructors anyone who has influenced me and means somthing to me. Just all personal :). If sadly it doesnt get developed... ill just have to develop it as B&W but it kind of defeats the purpose of me doing it on kodachrome for COLOR slide film :P

Ah yes Broxibear, "Moma don't take my Kodachrome..."
Nice video.
Thanks for sharing with us.

My 2nd day air package finally got delivered today. A week after I shipped it!
Posted 2 years ago # -
Any word if your going to get your prints in time?
Posted 2 years ago # -
Thanks to BroxiBear for the UTube Kodachrome video!! I have never found a more stable film than Kodachrome 25 or 64. But the Nikon D700 or even a D300 will still be shared by digital today so that is why the great film and its processing went extinct. So Kodachrome is gone. Not a good day from that standpoint! But again thanks to Nikon Rumors for covering this monumental change.
Fuji Velvia or Fujichrome would be my recommendation for those still shooting this type of film.Posted 2 years ago # -
I think I just figured out who NikoDoby is!
NYTimes just did a story on Kodachrome's last day. They interviewed people who traveled from all over the world to get their film developed:
"In the span of minutes this week, two such visitors arrived. The first was a railroad worker who had driven from Arkansas to pick up 1,580 rolls of film that he had just paid $15,798 to develop."

I can totally see Niko walking in there to pick up his film wearing engineer overalls and hat.

LOL!

cross processing anybody? I was told that for the last several years the environmental agency fined Kodak every month for the chemicals used in the process of making and developing kodachrome. Both this and the decline of film (slide in particular)led to the stop of the manufacture of the film in 2009... The question is"Was a year enough time to shoot off those last rolls?"
Good post Broxibear... Sadly the big yellow mother did just that... :(

CHOO-CHOO!
I'm pouring some beer on the ground for you Kodachrome. Farewell dear friend.

From NYT: Among the recent visitors was Steve McCurry, a photographer whose work has appeared for decades in National Geographic including his well-known cover portrait, shot in Kodachrome, of a Afghan girl that highlights what he describes as the “sublime quality” of the film. When Kodak stopped producing the film last year, the company gave him the last roll, which he hand-delivered to Parsons. “I wasn’t going to take any chances,” he explained.
My avatar is that picture. Back in 1991 I bought a brick(I think that's what they called it, 15 or 16 rolls) of Kodachrome to shoot on my round the USA road trip. Going the way of the 45RPM, Polaroid, VHS, Walkman. . .
