I was working on my radio poppers and had a flash pointed down at the desk. No real reason was just the way it was laying. I clicked off a shot to see if the flash was connected or not. When it flashed there was a little poof of smoke, best description I have and the desk has a little line of discoloration. I bought the desk used and dont know what was on it. I wiped it down when I bought it with a natural cleaner. The flash smells electronic hot(for lack of a better description) does not feel hot. I flash off a few more flash fires without the camera or radio triggers attached and there is nothing. Seems to be firing fine with no more smell except the lingering smell. I took out the batt and am nervous to use this flash now. What should I do. Send it in to nikon? How much does a fix/examination cost? Need help! Flash is sitting in the garage. on the floor.

What kind of batteries were you using? The only time I've seen a Nikon start smoking is when using cheap no-name-brand batteries.

The Front, if covered, can convert the massive amount of light energy into thermal heat, which is concentrated on the surface covering the flash and or the flash pvc front itself.
the discoloration is caused by the intense themperature most likely gas is produced under the table coating (lightens up the color). the pvc itself if it's heaten up very quickly can cause fumes of softener which is used in every pvc production (clear pvc needs softener to be transparent). the sb-600 has no temperature warning but if it's flashing fine forget about the accident ;).btw the flash should be pointed on your subject. :P

Each piece of technology is operated by the smoke that is trapped inside. If all of that smoke escapes, the piece of technology will stop working. If it is still working then the smoke didn't come from the flashgun :P

I was using Energizer 2450mAh Rechargeable batts. Good condition though well used. I threw them away and bought new ones. I have not had a single prob since with recharge time or light output. Im just going to take the batt out of that flash when not in use. better safe then sorry. I might pick up another 600 and that way if this one goes out at critical moment I can quickly change it out.

my smoking sb600WOW!
Tell it the risks of cancer and other lung troubles if it keeps that up! :)
Seriously... Is there anything inside the flash chamber that it burning off when you fire it? A really small amount of moisture would do that, as would the tube itself if it was "on the way out"... Does the smoke smell of anything (burning wire for example)? If so, it could be a capacitor on the way out too ... Time for a new flash or a trip back to Nikon?
