Broxibear, Thanks for the links. I'd already viewed about 4-5 of them but am not sure of mixing the SB-900 with the SB-400, etc. Sounds like it can do it all but I'm not that trusting. If it can work for my needs now, I will be loyal for a very, very long time. Gave up trying to contact Wein about an optical slave that would work with the SB-400. A really very nice guy from Omega Brandess replied to the now obsolete links on the Wein website for information. Seems Wein is not using them anymore but have not updated their web site and bless me if I can find anyone at Wein Products who will even reply. Thought they were solid and had been for decades. Pocket Wizard is looking more and more like the solution I'll use but until I can afford that 800mm Sigma and the model who went with it, I'll not get the most from the system. :-)

Yeah, a bit of confusion here...CLS and PocketWizard are two different things that don't work together, it's one or the other as warprints says.(although CLS is triggered by light and PW by radio signal so you don't need direct view in order to trigger)
Your D90 will trigger a SB-900 using nothing but CLS so you wouldn't need a PocketWizard for that, I don't have a D90 so I'm not sure how many CLS flashes are controllable with that body ?
You might want to read this as this dude goes into way more detail about CLS and how it works... flickr.com/groups/nikoncls/

Just read this and I think Broxibear answered my question before I asked it:

    http://www.fotoprofil.dk/blog/2010/12/17/trippin%27-the-lights-%28english-version%29.aspx

With the AC-3 and MiniTTL do I even need the SB-900 on the camera to use the CLS? I have a D300s with the SB-400 and SB-900. According to the above link, I can mix the SB-400 right into the setup. Still may be confused about using the i-TTL of the system since it seems to be crystallizing that with the PW, none of the CLS flashes even need to be on the camera.

    Hi broxibear,

I'm a bundle of confusion today. I'm sort of aware about CLS. CLS allows any number (although about 12 is the 'practical' maximum' according to Nikon's general literature and support). I have several SB900s and SB800s. I use CLS a lot and like it (except for the obvious light of sight thing, which is why I'm interested in PW). :-)

(As an aside, if one uses an SB900 or SB800 as a Commander with a bounced flash, the extended distance is greatly increased. In fact, the flexibility of the system is _generally_ increased by using a speedlight as a commander.)

My interest is whether CLS and PW talk to each other, and if that matters, and how to interpret 7crossing's earlier remarks, or whether that was a misunderstanding on my part. Reading pbull221's link seems to say 'No' to that.

My guess is that we're chasing rabbits.

    My best,

    Mike

guys the miniTTL1 and flexTT5 are not regular PW products. the main point of using them is to use the CLS over the distance. main con of CLS is the need for the lamps to see each other, as the signal is transmitted through infrared, while in PW it's transmitted through radio. so what miniTTL1 and flex do is to transmit the CLS commands through radio. this gives You the possibility to put the lights in positions where You could only dream to put Your cls system, i.e. behind the doors

one more thing, just to sum it up theoretically (I heaven't tested the minittl and flex) the mini&flex should work like an invisible extension cable between a hot shoe and flash

Wow...when did this thread become so complicated lol ?
adamz's statement "mini&flex should work like an invisible extension cable between a hot shoe and flash" is the simplest way to describe how the basic functions of a PocketWizard work...there are other things it can do that CLS can't like trigger studio flash and extend your camera X-Sync speeds.
A lot of the technical info is on their site: *Link Removed*

You can use the MiniTT1 for basic triggering of any PocketWizard Receiver like the FlexTT5, PlusII and MultiMAX...depending on how you work you might not need 4 FlexTT5s pbull221, the Plus IIs are cheaper.

I cant wait till the AC3s are available.
That's when I'll get the whole set.
Until then, I don't have the full functionality of the CLS with flash exposure compensation for each of the 3 zones.

As one of the lucky PW beta testers, I have an AC3 and it works exactly as expected. You can get 3 zones, and mix manual with ControlTL. It really is the jewel of the system.

    MiniTT1 vs. FlexTT5:

Not precisely sure of the product differentiation here. Does everyone generally buy one MiniTT1 for the camera (because it's small), and then buy one FlexTT5 for each of their Nikon Speedlights (because they have an antenna)?

Also, are these becoming units more available in the US as of this post (1 March 2011), or are they still generally out-of-stock everywhere?

Sorry I cant help with US availability, I got mine (UK spec) from Hong Kong
For those of you new to Pocket Wizards, beware the US and UK frequencies are different, they are hard wired and cannot be switched ,changed, or modified

    Have just ordered an AC3

MiniTT1 is a transmitter only but more compact. Flex TT5 can act as a transmitter just like the Mini but also is a receiver and is what is needed for remote flash. The Mini will fire an attached flash on camera in addition to being a transmitter to Flex TT5's.

Thanks. I guess that's what most do, and how they expect them to be typically used.

    Thanks for your reply!

I just got back from my local dealer. They had four TT5s in-stock, but no TT1s. The TT5s are much bigger than I expected. I think I'll stick with my Nikon SU-800 commander, at least for now.

Unless you are having trouble with the remotes not "seeing " the SU800. The commander will be more user friendly, as you do not need yet other set of batteries and switches, for each and every remote

The big / only advantage of the wizards over the SU800, is that the remotes can be behind the camera or completely hidden eg behind the subject or even in a different room
Let's hope Nikon eventually get round to adding the option of adding radio remotes the their latest pro cameras and strobes

Yes, strange that one. I ticked the box on the PW web site asking to be kept informed of any firmware updates, and still haven't received any notification. Anyone received an email telling them of the new update? Fortunately now thanks to Niko, i've been checking the home page and saw it mentioned there. Updated all mine last week, it's easy peasy if anyone is worried about it.

I also didn't get any info from PW. As SkintBritt wrote, update is super easy. Plug, open PW utility, push the button "Update" and wait a little bit.
