There are many different companies out there that make camera straps, Cotton Carrier, Black Rapids, the one that came with your camera. What strap do you use?
Right now I don't use a strap which is not the best practice to do.

I use the Black Rapid. I like that my camera slides out of my way. I admit I am leery of using it with my 70-200, though I have. I do tend to keep touching the tripod mount when the 70-200 is on.

I use the 'Industry Disgrace' by Crumpler.

On my Nikon I am using the factory strap. No complaints with it, so haven't changed it. On my Minoltas (which I shot for 35 years) I used a variety of straps, most of then were similar to the straps now used by Nikon.
It might be informative to have people note why they don't use the Nikon factory strap.

I have the BlackRapid and been super happy with it. I too keep my hand on the camera when it is hanging at my hip, but never had a problem. A friend skis with his D3s and 70-200 on a BlackRapid without ever having an issue.
I prefer the strap to the Nikon strap because it is way longer and lets the camera slip down to my hip rather than being right under my arm. I also like that it isn't advertising a D700 when walking around and with the camera upside down and backwards on my hip, it draws less attention and is much easier to move through crowds with as I can just push it behind me when I need to. Having the lens pointing backwards affords it some protection as well when I am just walking around with hood on and no lens cap.

It's purely a personal choice as to which one feels better in use.
I know a few photojournalists who like the BlackRapid because they feel it's more comfortable in certain conditions, especially if they're carrying a couple of bodies with heavy zooms.
I don't work that way so the strap Nikon provided does the job perfectly for me...But I do wrap part of the strap round my wrist, so if I did let go of my body for some reason it would hang off my wrist rather than hit the ground.Posted 2 years ago # -
Black Rapid.
I have never understood what the short strap Nikon ships are supposed to do. Back in the day (70's) I carried my Minolta on a modified (yet full length) guitar strap. Anything but the smallest and lightest of camera just feels awkward anywhere but waist level.
The concept of suspending the camera upside down (and here's the key) by only one anchor point is such an intuitive move I'm shocked it wasn't widespread before. Two anchor points means twists, tangles, and shit in the way. Anchored at Nikon's anchor points means the straps are at control level, once again potentially in the way. Anchored at the tripod thread means they always fall below my hands and out of my way.
Genius! Wish I had thought of it first!

I have bought a black rapid for Christmas and my wife has wrapped it and put it under the tree for me :o) I look forward to trying it out. I find the Nikon strap to be too short.

Upstrap. Love it. Ditch the Nikon strap if you travel - it's like an advertisement to have someone steal your camera. Not comfortable anyhow. Upstrap is great.

I have two of the seat belt straps from photojojo on my F5 and D90. Love them.

I use black rapid straps.
The traditional neckstrap has almost cost me a camera several times, by grabbing the camera and lifting it up, getting the strap snagged on something then whoops, fumble to recover, nearly dropping the camera. no bueno.
plus i find the neck strap uncofmortable if im shooting all day especially with a heavier setup.
the black rapid strap keeps the camera on my hip and not thudding against my chest, the accessbility is every bit as good as a neck strap, but it stays out of the way. It is also a very comfortable setup, i can have my gripped D90 w 70-200 2.8 AF-s, plus an SB-900 hooked on the BR and shoot all day without having any issues with fatigue.
another poster mentioned you can just tuck it behind you when navigating a crowd, that is a big bonus for me, especially if covering crowded events.
There is a similar strap called the SUN SNIPER which is basically the same thing, but you can get it with a steel cable woven into it, so nobody can come up and just cut your strap and run off with the camera. i plan to use one of those if i go abroad.
the cotton carrier looks like a man-bra, but it seems to be about the ultimate camera holder in terms of accessability and control, no more camera swinging when you lean down, it stays nice and secured in an easy access spot.
i just dont think im ready for the man bra.

Black Rapid "R" Strap is the best.
I use it with a D3s & 70-200 and feel very comfotable.

I too got a black rapid for x-mas.
I use it with a d300s and a 300 2.8 on the left and a d700 and 70-200 on the right. Grip on whatever.
It is not easy to swing up the 300, but i shoot with that most of the time (field sports). When the action gets too close I pull up the d700. I wish the viewfinder was big on the D300s as well.
The strap is very happy with a gripped d700 and 70-200 with an R3 fastener. Not so happy with a 300 2.8. No-one really answered my questions on this forum, so i just bought one. Happy with it. I imagine a pro body and a 300 4 would be the most it could handle and still be able to get it up fast.
Have only tried it for one soccer game so far (i am too imaptient to wait), will try it at another tomorrow if it's not raining.

Black rapid, but I use it with a Spider Holster, this keeps the camera safely in place on my waist when not in use. It also allows me to quickly get around the city, on an electric mountain bike, with the camera allways to hand

Black Rapid and Op/Tech pro. When using the Black Rapid, I connect the short ends of the Op/Tech strap through the Black Rapid, so if it's swivel mount was to fail (never had any reason to think so), the camera still wouldn't fall to the ground. I have never found attaching like this getting in my way. When working outdoors, in a crowd, I'll swap the Black Rapid for my Sunsniper Steel. Saves me from the paranoia I get that some one is eyeing up my equipment behind me.

Hi,
I use the Optech strap which connects to a dual harness when I work in an event so I can use two cameras with different lenses. It looks goofy, but it's a better contraption than some others.
Both straps have quick releases that allow for putting either camera on a tripod, and either camera can, although it's not so comfortable, be used as a single camera on the dual harness.
My best,
Mike

Homemade Black-rapid type strap, which cost me 2$ at a fabric store plus my manfrotto RC2 adapter.
I also keep the Nikon strap on for general use.
I wouldn't trust a 70-200 with my homemade solution, but for a Sigma 17-70 on a D7000 its great(and nearly free!)

The modern Nikon ones but I'm considering ditching (or exchanging) them as they are more of a burden than a help...

I used the Nikon strap on my D80 a few years ago and hated it. I've also used a wrist strap, but always felt trapped by it. Now days I don't use a strap at all 99% of the time, since when I'm not shooting my cameras are in my camera bag(s).

I've been using Crumpler's Industry Disgrace on my D7000 for about a week now. A bit expensive (~$30) but I'm quite happy with it. The straps come quite long, (can be shortened obviously), it's quite comfortable to wear for long periods (wore it for 7 hrs on Saturday), and I find it reassuring that its attachment points to the camera are a little slower but more secure that quick snaps, since I tend to hang over precipices fairly often.

black rapid for work.
Free smugmug pro strap for play!

The one that came with my Nikon.
Not the best strap in the world, but it gets the job done. Only issues I've had with it is if it gets really hot- that thing traps heat really easily and it isn't breathable.
Not a big issue right now since it's so cold out though.

Black Rapid, a couple of Optech cheap quick release neoprene straps and a very old blue neoprene Nikon strap (I think it is a knock off). I always carry my camera cross-body so all of them are longer.
Black Rapid for my walk around with usually my 70-200mm. I use the Optech and the Nikon strap for when I'm using a tripod since I can disconnect the main strap so it doesn't snag on stuff. Lost a lens once doing that.
Around home and most of my street stuff I don't use one since I just drop it in my bag between shots.

Wow I am surprised to see not a lot of mentions on the Optech strap. Just the one? It just feels right to me I love it. The Nikon factory strap is also quite good but really gets annoying and right in the way on a tripod it loves to wrap right around the head! The Optech have quick releases. Anyone on here use the hand strap with no strap attached for the neck/shoulder? I don't because it interfers with the ballhead shoe plate.
