you guys are awesome thanks, right now I'm torn/confused between the D90 and pulling the trigger on the D7000. Money is somewhat of an issue but I'm also thinking I might as well get the nicer camera and a decent lens. This way I can get her a nicer lens for her birthday and maybe a nice flash. She takes a ton of pix of the kids soccer, football, soccer, volleyball and basketball. Everyone ask her to be the picture lady.. Thanks again from a soon to be photonerd.

Buy her what you want.
Sorry, that doesn't read right - buy her WHAT YOU WANT!
What? WHAT! (Heh-heh).

I need to revise my recommendation, greeper. The D7000 sounds like exactly what she's looking for. Not only is the high ISO usable to about an extra stop compared to the D90 (your mileage may vary), but the AF system is much better than the D90's. The 3D tracking AF will almost blow your mind with how smart it is. The D90 has the 3D tracking, too, but with the D300-like AF sensor, much better metering sensor, and better processing chipset of the D7000 it's more useful.
Again, if you can find some way to scrape enough together to get the D7000 kit and an SB-600 that will give you a very usable indoor machine if you learn to use bounce flash well. Even without the flash the kit is usable if you crank the ISO (pictures will be fine for web/small prints to ISO 6400, probably).

Thanks again for all the input so I can by my wife (me) a new kick ass camera.. Although it's over budget I pulled the trigger on the D7000, Amazon was out of stock as was Samy's camera so I had to violate my own rule and purchase it from Worst Buy. Atleast they gave me the kit at the same price as amazon. Also I'm hoping my coaching stipend comes in so I can buy her the SB600 flash next month for her birthday.. Thanks again I'm sure she's (I'm) going to be very happy for a long long time.

As long as you don't come back on to post that your wife left you because actually she wanted a diamond bracelet not some digital camera ?...Only joking, I'm sure she'll love it.

I'm glad to hear it, greeper. Let her use it, too.

Nice to hear the end of the story for a change. So often posters ask for advise, and then we never hear the outcome of it. I'm pleased she liked it, welcome to the Nikon owners club! It's about now that you'll find that the expenditure doesn't stop here :-)

Yea no kidding her Birthday is next week so it looks like I'm breaking down for a flash, then a bigger lens any suggestions?

Although I own several SB900s for wireless CLS work, I actually only ever cary an SB400 when I'm walking about. I'd recommend one of these for opportune moments, and the new 700 for situations where you know in advance you are going to need one. There is nothing wrong with a 900, but they are big buggers, so not very portable. I may have missed where you said what lens you got with her 7000, but assuming it is one of the standard wide - medium telephoto's, I'd recommend the reasonably priced 70-300 f4.5-5.6 VR ED. Whilst being the slowest lens I own, for outdoor or well lit indoor work, it's the one I often call upon.

I have a 400, 600, and (just got a) sb900. I probably use the SB600 the most since I like throwing it off to the side and remote bounce light all over hell even with friends. It's also small enough to carry. The 400 is good also for family stuff. 900 is a big bugger for sure but a great flash. Good prices on the 600 right now. If you are just starting out that would be a good starter flash if you think you will use it.

Congrats, I hope you and your wife will both be happy with it. I find it a joy to use, and after several months it still surprises me with wonderful things it'll do.
Regarding the SB600, if Best Buy has one, you might want to get it now... it's been replaced by the SB700... they are already out of 600's at our local Best Buy (a friend of mine bought the last one, a floor model, last week). I think they may disappear quickly (though it's not a disaster, the sB700 is a nice flash, just more money).
