For those in the UK, I read an interesting article in this weeks Amateur Photographer magazine about the VAT increases in January 2011.
The major manufactures are set to pass on the 2.5% increase directly to customers rather than absorb the rise, so if you're thinking of buying equipment soon get it before the 4th of Jan.

I also heard this week, that in a poll of businesses, 60% said they were going to use the V.A.T. increase as an excuse to raise profit margins way above the 2.5% government rise. Another reason to buy this year broxibear, and more evidence of "rip off Britain". It won't be long before all Nikon equipment is the same price in pounds as it is I dollars, and the U.S. get a longer warranty!

one more reason for me not ask my friends or fmaily members to bring photographic goods from Uk :(
except for filters :D

and I thought that it's only us (Poles) who gonna get the VAT increase (from 22% to 23%)

As expected prices in the UK have gone up, some retailers have gone beyond the 2.5% vat increase, for example the Panasonic LX5 was £305 last week and has jumped to £330...a few retailers like jessops are not raising vat rates for another week so if you're considering a purchase now may be a good time?

I noticed that some cameras have increased in price and some haven't - D7000 has stayed at £999 at Warehouse Express (was in stock yesterday but now out of stock) and Grays of Westminster have actually reduced it to £999 from £1049.
D700 has gone up in price in line with the VAT increase.
On a £300 item it wouldn't change whether or not I purchased the item but as you say, if someone is looking to buy then (in general) better to do it sooner rather than later.

Hi gd
I don't think the D7000 will still be £999 at Warehouseexpress when they get stock in, infact I don't recall them ever having the D7000 in stock ?
Gray's have always been expensive, £5000 for a D3x when it's £4700 elsewhere ?...I spent too much in 2010 on photographic equipment and I've no money left lol ?
You know somethings not right when a camera body costs the same price as a car ?Posted 2 years ago # -

Sady it appears as if education standards in the UK are going downhill so fast that the ability to read has been lost. As I said in my original post - Warehouse express had them in stock all last week. I did phone to confirm it as I was tempted to upgrade from my D200 but in the end decided against it. Likewise Grays of Westminster have them in stock at the moment at £999 and have actually reduced it as of Jan 4th (from £1049).
Broxibear - apologies if it sounded like I'm trying to plug Grays. It wasn't meant - I just don't find them much more expensive than others e.g. Warehouse express have the D3X at £4938 and Park Cameras \ Walters Photo \ Camera World are all over £5000. Grays are just down the road from me and usually willing to price match so they are my usual point of reference.
In general, I usually find Misfuds quite good on pricing - just did a check and they have the D7000 listed as £979. No indication of availability though.

Nah don't worry about it gd I didn't think you were plugging them or anything.
camerapricebuster.co.uk is a good place to check for the best UK prices and it's updated a few times a day.Posted 2 years ago #
