Now that I have a D200, I keep my D40 wrapped in a shirt in the back of my truck, but that's just me. Half the fun of owning a d40 is that I can abuse it and not feel guilty about it, and I get my best shots by always having it around. Of course, being in Texas, I'll probably kill my battery this summer (they don't do well in the heat).
Good inexpensive bag for D40?

Are you saying I should abuse my D40?
:D

LOL Maybe if I could afford a D200, I'd feel the same... It took me a while to be able to afford the D40. LOL I'm protecting it!

Guys, let's don't forget that camera is only a tool, and sometimes it's just fun to risk it a little bit in order to get a shot, and You know all that Nikon produces the most resistant cameras around the world :P

True Adamz. My D80 has survived 2 drops (some of the plastic in the corners chipped off, so I have to cover it with tape).
Somebody should start a drop-test thread LOL.

Come to think of it, how do the other companies compare in terms of build quality? Pentax, Canon, Olympus, Sony?

I've seen some cannon's that have taken a serious beating. I don't really see Pro's shooting the other stuff. My guess is that its all pretty good. The Japanese know a thing or two about manufacturing.

Sorry for reviving this thread, I was searching for it but I couldn't find it.
Anyone have any recommendations for a photo backpack that doesn't scream photobag? In my ideal world it would say Jansport.
Thanks.

I don't like backpacks, but have been extremely fond the Domke line of bags. I used the original F-2 with Nikon F3 cameras for years. The only thing that wore out were the little rubber threads in the shoulder strap.
The bags are cheap (inexpensive at least), come in various sizes, crush down easily if space is not being used, are fine in rain and the canvas is soft enough that it won't abrade your skin if it rubs against your arm or your side if it's hot and you take off your shirt. They also are un-imposing. I carried the courier looking bag in Europe with a Contax G2 and 3 lenses and looked just like everyone else on the street. The black bags are the least conspicuous, but the beige are better in hot climates and sunshine.

this is the bag I had for my d60, I love it! It fits my laptop so its the perfect size for traveling, and fits under the seat on the plane. For a photo beginner like me I see this bag as perfect. Somewhat matches Nikons colors too.

Its not that tough to DIY yourself your own backpack. The only thing that makes a camera bag a camera bag is some extra padding and a modular system of dividers to keep everything sorted (Hint: Foam + Velcro). Do a quick google search and you can find some good guides \ ideas.
I've been considering doing this for traveling in place like Mexico (or Detroit). Sometimes its good not to be conspicuous.
