Hey All,
I've got a D7000 and SB-900 and I've been getting into the party scene a lot lately.
Do people have suggestions for settings on both units? I have read briefly about rear curtain sync but i fail to see much of a difference (maybe I'm doing it wrong!)

It depends primarily on the ambient light also. However using a fast aperture lens would definitely help. Try bouncing off as much of the light as possible else your pictures might be rather harsh.
Try using a slower shutter speeds (around 1/15th or even less works for me) to show more movement. Play around with the settings until you get what you are looking for. Ambient does play a big role. It's a little counter-intuitive sometimes, because I find myself using smaller aperatures (f5.6-8) instead of larger ones, and lower ISO's because I want to the flash to freeze my subjects more.
There are no magic settings. It totally depends on the event or club.
The best quality club photos I ever took were at a hookah bar with a 10 foot ceiling that had red walls had the ceiling had been somewhat yellowed by smoke. I bounce flashed and the reflecting light created absolutely creamy warm skin tones.
Do a forum search. We've covered concert/nightclub settings before.
Get a 50mm 1.4 or 35mm 1.8 first of all. You need fast glass. Then set your camera to M or manual set your ISO between 640 and 1250, make sure that when you do rear curtain sync that your SS is lower than 1/60th of a sec. Even though it will sync above that you wont see the blur and freeze effect. Also set your SB 900 to M as well at 1/16... Either this or try setting the camera at Aperture priority and the strobe at TTL (make sure the D7000 is set for TTL too)...
