Very important - no AF without it (LOL!)
Seriously though - if you shoot static stuff (landscapes and the like) then 3 is fine. If you are going to attempt things running then more would be good.

Ditto what lupedelupe said. I'll just add that no matter how many focus points you've got, learning how to use them is the most important thing!

but sometimes less is better than more, for me 11 is the right number

For me, 3 is too few, 51 is way more than I need. The D90 has 11 which is nice. I use 21 on my D300 and that's plenty. I should say, I use one with the others as assist points in dynamic mode.

D40 and D60 works very well with 3 AF points so don't worry about it too much, you just have to be sure that one of them is on your subject.

Unless you're doing wildlife which brings in a whole new vision.

I think a minimum of 7 provided that they are placed so that three are in the middle and 4 cover the thirds. I don't think that even 11 would be enough if they are not placed on the 4 third's crossing points. This is what I miss the most on the D40X.

For me 1 is good enough ... I only set mine to the center although I have 11

I assume we all understand that it all depends on circumstances. Some situations require just 1 AF point, others more, but it is not only a number of AF points it is how your camera or you are using them. I am fascinated how well Nikon 51 point AF works. But sometimes for me the only way to go is manual focus.
And number of AF points on D40 or D60 does not mean they are bad cameras, they could actually be used quite successfully for sport or wildlife if you know what you are doing, it just means that there are situations that you could do a bit better and easier with more.Posted 3 years ago #
