Whatever it takes to get the shot?...Although it won't be long before the brolly hits something, the flash to drops off and smashes into a thousand pieces.
Being a former assistant my first thoughts were HIRE A BLOODY ASSISTANT YOU CHEAPSKATE!
I don't care if it looks ridiculous. I think it's awesome! Gonna make one for myself!
Nah thanks.
If you can't find a friend or get anybody to hold the strobe for you than this will work. however keep in mind that unless you want your photos to have the same boring lighting setup, you need to make the backpack thingy versatile enough to change the angles etc.
Personally I would never use it.

This guy must be his friend lol.
Love it!
That is very cool actually and quite useful I bet. I actually saw similar contraptions at a car show back in the fall. The models didn't seem to mind either looks strange, but so does getting on your hands and knees with a tripod to get a unique low angle shot in a public place.
I have a home made 15" x 10" speedlight softbox that I made for this purpose. I just hold in my left hand and it works great. It is also not as ridiculous looking and is easier to manage.

Cool! I too, have a near-identical set-up to yours, except made by Photoflex (which is apparently discontinued in this size), which I also hand-hold in my left hand:
Nikon SB-800 Speedlight.
Nikon SC-29 TTL remote cable.
Photoflex extra-small softbox w/speedring.
Quantum Turbo battery.
Though much nicer than just an unbounced flash head, my Photoflex softbox is a bit on the small side, still resulting in fairly hard light when used more than even just a couple feet from your subject. I recently switched to the large Lumiquest reflector instead.
Hi,
I have 2 SB900s and 2sb800s, 2 SB24s and will like add 2 sb700s or 2 Metz 58s soon. Like Studio I have some Photoflex softboxes, and some Fong discs. Every thing gets diffused, boxed, boomed, snooted, or in some way controlled. I usually use 2 to all six and soon to be 8 for nearly every shoot, whether indoor or out, cloudy or sunny.
All work wirelessly using one of the SBs as a commander (using a flash instead of the onboard flash has be liberating - worth the money - ask if you have any questions why).
I've given some though to adding some 'Alien Bees' to the mix, but my lighting seems to work well enough, and are light, ,maybe better to say, portable, and so far seem quite adequate. I think I would rather invest in more speedlights than larger heavier studio lighthing - I really the idea of like them, but I would rather be nimble.
As for the 'brella light - ah, no, but thanks for asking. ;-) I get enough geeky looks.
An as for 'God of lights' Guy - I use inexpensive Lowell Uni-TO Light Stand - 8' that collapse to 21." and fit in a Lowell LB-35 Large Litebag Soft Case. It works pretty well and isn't too heavy to haul around. The lights fit well enough, setup fast, don't get tossed about in our heavy Montana winds. They go everywhere I go. Since the speedlights' heads rotate you can put the infared sensors as to pickup the Commander's flash.
If anyone wants links to clarify, just PM me.
My best,
Mike
I have a Wescott softbox that I attach to the front of my SB800. I use the built in diffuser on the flash to difuse the light further, so it is fairly soft. As for the jetpack, I wish to photograph the guy using it on a windy day or on a crowded street.

Wow! That's a LOT of Speedlights, Mike! Yeah, I just love the portability of Speedlights. Not fond of 'AA' recycle times, but still great to travel "light." I have two Nikon Speedlights, and I think about five or six Vivitar 283s (the old-fashioned kind with manually dial-able, variable power output). Keep meaning to buy an SU-800 commander unit someday. I think it's a slick way to go.
As silly as the "umbrella jet-pack" looks, it inspired me to do some thinking about my plans for my location photography I'm hoping to do soon for my portfolio. I initially wanted to use a large white umbrella, with my SB-800 as my primary key. Most, actually all, of my locations, will be "stolen," so rapid set-up/breakdown will be a priority. I'll probably only use one key, and expose for ambient. This way, I can power the single SB-800 with my Quantum Turbo, so recycle times will be wicked-fast. 'Course nothing screams, "LOOK! PHOTO SHOOT HERE!" more than a large photo umbrella, mounted on an uninsured, unpermitted, light stand.
I'm also a huge fan of bouncing keys into giant pieces of Foamcore. Not very portable (or, stealthy), but produces beautifully soft light. There's a couple of pieces of grip equipment I'd have to kludge together to make a nice handheld, Speedlight-into-4'x 4' Foamcore rig (held by an assistant).
My personal fave is the norman 200b's... I like that I can mount a softbox on it or put it on a brascket/ small cheap lightstand and I can use my sb900 as a slave so I don't even need the su800 adapter... Gotta love that sb900 too

I only use it for events/parties where I am just taking impromptu posed shots as I move through the crowd. I have noticed a considerably nicer effect over typical speedlight diffusers that mount directly and allow for either handheld or hotshoe mounted speedlights. I would never use this on a "photoshoot". I generally alot enough time to negate the need for an on-the-fly-auto-umbrella-holder thing.
