I am going to be in bangkok for one week for work in July. But I was thinking of staying on for the weekend to do the tourist thing... How safe is it to walk around bangkok in the evening with a camera? Whats good to catch while I am there for a couple of days...

I have been to Bangkok many times but haven't been there in about five years, so my experiences are probably out dated. Like most large cities there are areas you don't want to be in at any time. I've found that early morning walks to many parks are interesting and safe. There are many wonderful sites to visit, many temples etc. Early evening in many areas is probably safe if you stay in very populated areas. Try a tuk tuk ride, motorized tricycle with wild drivers. I was going to offer to talk by phone, but remembered you are from OZ, so that might not work too well! ;>)

heartyfisher - I've been in bangkok last October and it's really safe place during the day and night. If You happen to have some time, take a one day excursion to safari park on the outskirts of bangkok - great picture opportunity, as they have a lot of different wild birds and animals over there. as for sightseeing in bangkok, as bickhal mentioned there are a lot of different temples which are beautiful, but to be honest tai girls are prettier :) (just remember one thing that You need to wear long pants if You want to enter the golden temple complex) - if You have some other question fell free to contact me on adam [at] zdebel [dot] pl will be more than happy to help You.

@ NikiDoby : What a good Idea! .. I should take my Xray lens and get some snaps of it and post it up here! Well by then I may actually be able to buy one!

Thanks guys for the suggestions .. Will look into it.. but I only really have 2 half days .. will see how it goes! may be I will have to extend one day for the safari park, sounds like fun!

Hi, I'm Thai and live in Bangkok. Tourist with camera is fine if you walk around famous place.

But if you in the night or some place that not main road may be difference story.

How ever 'Farang' was welcome for all Thai.

That World Wide Photowalk is awesome.
The spot for the walk in Bangkok is one of the best spots to take picture, near the big Jao Praya (wrong spelling, but phonetically correct) River and the Grand Palace. You'd better make sure you carry enough CF cards!
