The Sendai photo tour I linked to earlier is gone! The one that was playing on the main page under Nikon related news/links May30,2009. That's a shame for those who didn't get to see it. Nikon didn't like the inside of their plant being plastered all over The Internets. You see, Nikon does read this website!

Did we just catch a glimpse of something totally top secret and we didn't realize it? Hope nobody got in trouble for this. I really enjoyed that picture tour. It only proved Nikon has better working conditions than Canon. Nikon employees get to use chairs.

Employees should stand up for themselves... of course maybe they are scared to stand up because they are worried somebody will steal their chair and not give it back.

@NikoDoby ... ever heard of media monitoring? Of course Nikon reads or has some agency read for it all or the most important forums, blogs, sites, etc and that in addition to the print and broadcast media.

Well of course Nikon's heard of the internet! I'm positive a lot of you are Nikon spies, but then that just might be my schizophrenia talking :P
I agree with fraew though, Nikon should listen to us a little closer.

I just don't understand the harm in viewing a gallery that has been online for over two years. Now Nikon starts slapping people around to get it taken down? It was just a friendly photo tour. Nikon has giving tours of Sendai to worthy individuals before. It's a shame that we are now all unworthy of a casual visit inside.

I think they had a problem with pictures of their employees sitting down while they were working instead of standing and looking productive. Well for those of you who are interested, here's another link to Nikon's official handout pictures of it's Sendai workers. Thanks to Rob Galbraith.

If you guys are ever worthy of a visit to the Sendai plant, make sure you checkout TOKYO Interior across the street. They've got some nice stuff for your home there :)

A lot of companies are very strict about showing their production processes. While the layman notices whether the workers are sitting down or standing up, a competitor would get a LOT more information from the photos.

I'm also sure that we have a Nikon employee registered at the site and I also believe that his/her post count is a nice round fat zero. No employee of Nikon would in a million years be allowed to post anything Nikon related on a rumour forum. When drawing parallels with the gaming industry then even on the official forums the developers do not respond to allegations, demands or rumours. When they do write something, it looks usually like a press release from the media because that is what it is: a text most probably written or at least edited by the PR department of the company.

I'm pretty sure that a lot of the so called leaks regarding new products are also conscientiously released by the company itself albeit anonymously. In such companies communication is very well regulated down to the stationery and templates they use.

I admit that there is always a possibility of a rogue employee but the risks involved would surely be horrendous.

True that, monty11. However I don't think there was anything of value in the photos from an espionage point of view. Canon has people working inside Nikon as does Nikon at Canon. Corporate espionage is a game that's always been played. Nikon knows what Canon, Sony, Olympus,etc are up to. They may not know exact details but they know.

Nikon is not going to give tours of areas in the plant they don't want visitors to see. Especially if it's a group of journalist. Your never allowed to just walk around the plant freely opening doors and peeking into closets :) I really think it boils down to the seemingly "causal" nature of the workers in the pictures that were removed. They were just siting, smiling and just going about their daily work routines.

If you look at the official Nikon handout photos, in my post above, you'll see some of the same areas of the factory. Same machines, same f-mounts, same green floor. The only difference is that the Nikon controlled pictures show everything neatly stacked, every worker standing, and everyone looking very focused and committed to their jobs.

The official pictures are just planned to look spontaneous. That's what made the removed gallery so interesting to me. It was just snap shots of the people who work hard to build our cameras.

Or maybe in one of the "banned" pictures you could zoom in and read made by Canon on a D3 sensor! :0

Niko I also wouldn't like if someone will come to my place, took pictures and post them all over the internet, therefor I understand Nikon's point of view. They care for their assets, and showing a factory to some special quests is nothing comparable to showing it to a large number of ppl all around the world, and as they also want to send a unified message to all of us, they actually have the right to control what they show and the way they show it - as You mentioned, there're some differences between pictures from the first gallery and pictures in Your link. So summing up, I agree with monty that PR department is in charge from top to the bottom.

Who knows, maybe the pictures were used without proper authorisation of the author or maybe they weren't communicating the message that the PR department had envisioned. But we will never know, as Nikon will definitely not issue a statement explaining to why the pictures were removed.

I've had the chance to sniff the inner workings of a bigger company and you'd be amazed at how everything is regulated and controlled. There are dedicated persons who are allowed to communicate with the media and preferentially this does not take place live over the phone without having seen the questions beforehand. All photos, materials, texts, etc should be approved. I believe the cause for this is today's media that thrives on scandals and blood. As twisting words and taking comments out of context is so widely spread, the corporate image is at stake. When there is a picture of the Nikon production facility where the employees have baseball running on one screen, it is more than likely that this could be used together with a bogus text that Nikon is doing poorly and workers don't have anything to do.

I understand guys. To me all the above points are valid. I'm very aware of how the corporate PR (Public Relations) dept works. I know firsthand how an "image" whether real or imagined has to be protected. Just look at movie stars and their battle with the paparazzi, but also look at government and journalist. When was the last time you flipped through "The Sun" or "The Daily Telegraph" and only saw PR handout pictures?

Nikon should relax a little. We are all, well most of us, reading this site because we are Nikon groupies!
Anyway it's spilled milk now. My only concern is that no one should get in trouble for it.
Oh and Gentoo, paranoia is part of schizophrenia. Just say'n :)
