Hi everyone, after looking into a lot of detail i've decided that Nikon is the company I am going to spend all of my hard earned cash in. Im planning to pick up a d7000 along with a 24-70 f2.8. I've heard a lot of people saying that Nikon provides a 5 year warranty on all lenses in the US but haven't seen any info in the UK? Does it still apply? and if not are there any work-arounds ;) ?

Nikon (The Japanese Company) offers a 1 year international warranty on all products, any warranty after that time is covered by the national subsidiary. You should look at the Nikon UK website to get full details on warranty coverage.

The 2 year UK warranty only covers camera bodies and lenses that are sold as a lens/body kit. Lenses and other equipment not bought as a camera body kit only have the single year guarantee. As PB PM says, the 5 year deal in the US is provided by Nikon USA. Good for them bad for UK. I would imagine you could buy from a US seller, but I'm sure you would have to register it to a US address, and return it to a US service centre if you needed to make a claim.
Sad that in the US they get better service, but I am really not suprised. I have to say I thought that the lenses would be covered for two years as well.
What I was interested in was the extended two years warranty in the UK, this is a quote from the link above:
"In addition you will have the opportunity to purchase an additional year which will allow you to receive a three year warranty. This three year warranty will have the added benefit of covering you for accidental damage and theft for the whole three years of the warranty."
It sounds good, but if it can't include lenses, then I can't see the point of it as you would need to get another policy to cover them.

I bought a D3 earlier in the year and after registering it had a 2 year warranty.
The 2-year warranty on SLR kits only covers the camera body, not the lens.
The AF-S motor on my kit 18-200 broke a few months ago, just over a year after I bought it. I had to pay for the repair even though I'd registered for the two-year warranty.
I sent the camera in a few days ago for AF calibration and hot pixel remap, and it's being done for free.

Seeing as this lens will cost more than my car, is there any maintenance costs I need to look out for?

Isn't that what I said? Sorry, maybe I didn't word my reply well. I was trying to say that only camera bodies AND cameras sold with lenses as part of a boxed kit, were covered by the UK 2 year warranty. In other words, the only way you get two years cover for a lens, is if it comes with a new camera body. If you buy a lens on it's own, or flash etc, it's only guaranteed for a year. I have not investigated the period that compacts are covered for so I'm sure you're right broxibear. It sounds to me like your lens should have been covered cold hands luke, I would definately have challenged that.

That was back in June this year, and I'd bought it as part of a D300 kit in March 2009.
The really annoying part was that it had hardly been used - I'd bought another couple of lenses quite quickly after the kit and the 18-200 got relegated for "when I can only take one lens" (which has turned out to be "never" so far). I only discovered it was broken when my girlfriend bought a second-hand D300 with no lenses, and I gave her the 18-200 as a starter. She uses it all the time now though, so it wasn't money wasted. Moral of the story: test everything a couple of weeks before its warranty runs out.
SkintBrit - Nikon told me the kit lens wasn't covered when I called to register for the 2 years, and again every time I called regarding that lens repair. It seems to me there's no way to get more than a year's warranty on a lens in the UK, except maybe paying for it. If you've got something that definitely, unambiguously says otherwise, I'd love to see it.

You'd think so broxibear, but as I said I asked when registering (and every time I called about the repair) and was told it just applied to the camera. I've come to read "SLR kit" in that line as "the SLR in the kit".
This thread has inspired me to submit a question on Nikon's website, I'll quote the response here.
This is something that got me thinking - I remember hearing somewhere that there was an EU directive on this exact thing - warranties (for example, I have an iPhone and I know my warranty is for two years, even though the contract is for 1).

Summary - you have a two year warranty _at least_ regardless of what the manufacturer says. However, your contract is with the supplier (e.g. Amazon) _not_ Nikon... therefore, the supplier has to get it fixed (supply of goods act in the UK) rather than Nikon directly (who may do it but are not required to).

Ever used it in practice? I wouldn't know what to say.
O well is there any places someone would recommend for insurance? I somewhat am clumsy and can barely trust myself with an expensive phone let alone an expensive lens. I've herd people say they use particular credit cards which gives them insurance, ive never had a credit card so i dont know of these services...
Word of advice if Nikon are listening...... OFFER 5 YEAR WARRANTIES TO THE UK ASWELL!

Not really got anything useful to add (Nikon haven't answered my question yet), but my D300 came back from Nikon this weekend and wanted to say I am really impressed with the job they've done.
There are now no hot pixels, NONE! Before there were a few that were only visible if I took a picture with the body cap on, and a couple which were bad enough to show in ordinary photos and were quite annoying. Now a body cap photo is pitch black, even at ISO 3200.
Not had a chance to really check the focus yet, but from a few snaps of the cat with my 50/1.8 already I think there's an improvement. And they've done a great job cleaning it up, it looks nearly brand new. There was a load of dust behind the screen protector that I couldn't properly get rid of, it's all gone now.
The option of the third year warranty "payable" is not covered for Nikon professional cameras D3X for example. In the Uk all warranties apply to the first owner only ,and are not transfereable. whyNikon do this I do not Know. It would make a substanial difference to the secondhand value if warranties were transferable. while in the warranty period.
I'm surprised it isn't breaking consumer law to have it only available to the first owner. Also, DSLR's and lenses should have three year warranties IMHO.
I was very surprised that a company like Nikon have such retarded warranty policies. I have had terrible experience from Canon because of their warranty policy - in fact that experience is why I'll never buy another canon product - but Nikon should be better than that.

Please don't talk about Nikon Warranty, Loads of my equipment becomes uncovered this month! :-( No doubt it'll wait till the day after before showing any signs of trouble.
I live in the US. I bought a Nikon D 80 about 4 years ago and got an extended warranty for the camera for an additional 2 years ( total 3 yrs ). The price for the extended warranty was $ 49.95 and was from Nikon. I thought that was very reasonable for a $ 700 body. You might look and see if this option is available to you. Don't know about other warranties ( Mack ). I got the camera from Adorama. I usually buy from B&H.
