in short,
BURN IT ! :)not like I was planing in getting one BUT everyone was expecting a lot more from the camera then just + video and some strangely fast FPS rate
lets hope that it stays as a rumor and we gone get D400 with a bit more thn abovePosted 3 years ago # -
Makes me VERY happy I pulled the trigger on the D300 a couple months ago and didn't wait for the next one.

keep in mind its still rumor
stop taking it as a fact : )Posted 3 years ago # -
I'll consider a D300s if Nikon adds the rumored HD video and dual cards for the same price as a current D300, maybe. If they add $500 or more to todays price and that's all they add then no. I'll wait for the D400 or maybe a discontinued D700. I doubt the price of the current D300 will come down if a D300s is released.

I'll wait for d400 as video on d300 is not a solution for me - have a d90 with video and use it twice

i am pretty stoked about this, will make a great addition to my D200 if it has better higher ISO capabilities. . . love the dual CF capabilities, and the fps is almost as quick as the Canon MarkD at 10fps, so I'm pretty stoked. . .my D200's 5fps is nice, better than the D90, but I need a body with higher iso abilities. . .
The D700 is still out of my price range. . .

completely meaningless. If they want to waist their money on manufacturing a camera no-one willing to buy, and to clear their stock of those D300S's at D5000 prices, they should go ahead like this. There are 3 reasons behind which I could see: 1. They want to sell their stock in D300 as quickly as possible, and 2. they are intending to change their sensor supplier and feel to have to launch a product asap until they have completely new product (D400) in place, 3. they plan to give up semi-pro DX production line and launching a camera for building in all the D300 parts still available. We will see, cause they have to launch the product this summer if they want to continue to launch challenging innovative DX product, but the apology on Markt & Technik website for the D400 book would also make sense in such a case. From marketing point of view: desastrous for Nikon's only recently achieved high reputation. In my opinion: D300 owners be happy, all others buy FX D700, just as Nikon's marketing department is promoting. We urgently are needing a forth big player in the semi-pro/pro area (joining Nikon, Canon, Sony). Also, I cannot imagine that they would launch a better-than-D700 D400 before D700x. In this scenario, an intermediate D300s would make sense. Sorry for the guys who would buy such a camera.

:-( I was hoping to get the D400 by august.. Now I hope they release the D400 by Xmas ..
Still .. The good news for D400 is that it should be a fair bit better than the D300/s!! (because they have stuck the D300s in between) What a sweet camera that would be huh? a couple or 3 more mega pixels. at least 1 stop more High ISO capability. Similar or more FPS. Better DR. Better Video(Probably 1080p) 2 cf/sd memory slots. Yup sure would be worth waiting for.!! Probably a better Auto focus system! Looks like Nikon may be preparing for another big bang release like the D300/D3 Whee!

The SD card capability was a complete surprise for me. I don't think it was going to make it. Oh well, we'll see when it's launched.
And, maybe it will have a swivel screen too?
Posted 3 years ago # -
I like the idea of SD slot as it's some kind becoming a standard for this level cameras to have double card capabilities
Posted 3 years ago # -
If you look at UK Nikon site D300 is already tagged NEW, so there maybe something to this after all.
The only thing I like about it is second SD slot.
Video looks kind of cool but I really do not care about it.Posted 3 years ago # -
"I'll wait for d400 as video on d300 is not a solution for me - have a d90 with video and use it twice"
Exactly the same with me!

OK, that's it. I'm done waiting and I'll be going for the FX-D700.
Admin, please advise: any rumors for a replacement in that area?Posted 3 years ago # -
adamz, isn't SD cards less secure than compact flash?
So isn't it sort of a step back? Then again, it is convenient when you've run out of CF cards.
I have thought in the past of a compact flash SD card adapter.

I use to hate SD cards but now that so many things use it (like my TV!) I've changed my tune. SD cards are pretty cheap compared to everything else, especially Sony Memory Sticks and CF cards are starting to remind me of bulky VHS tapes. I'd be happy if a D300s or D400 had dual SD/CF card slots. My wife once even washed an SD card with the laundry and it's still working just fine! That pretty much convinced me of SD's superiority.

It is called Secure Digital card isn't it? Although all security features are implemented by a tiny switch.
SD card reliability is dependent on quality of manufacturing; SanDisk, Lexar and Panasonic are all very reliable, comparable to CF cards. And it is very usable feature to have dual card slots in a camera, for security and other reasons...Posted 3 years ago # -
NSX - I'm using sandisk extreme III both SD and CF and never had any problems with neither SD or CF, also as for speed both of the versions are quite similar CF on d200 and SD on d90

Something to be a replacement for D300 is coming, but does anyone think that D300s could be just a plural of D300 and not the name of a new model?
Posted 3 years ago # -
A bit disappointing, but not that surprising. Nikon gains a lot by being able to mass produce the same sensor for a lot of cameras. I'll stick with the D200 for now. I think I'll hold out for the D700X/D800.

I wonder if all the petrol head forums are also full of complaining when a car manufacturer makes a facelift instead of coming out with a new model?
Consider the D300s a facelift of the D300 to keep the camera model fresh. An introduction date of July 2009 (making it up) looks a lot better than August 2007. In today's day and age things become obsolete (in the eyes of the general consumer) a lot quicker than they used to. This is why the products need to be fresh. This is a good selling argument for those who can't be bothered to do some research before buying.
What strikes me as strange, is that some are complaining that the D300s doesn't have enough new gadgets to upgrade to it ... well guess what, if you own a D300, then you most likely are not the target group of the D300s unless you collect them. In fact when the D300 came, even then many D200 owners said that they wouldn't upgrade because they were perfectly happy with what they had. The trend is the same among Canon users, people more often than not skip one model.

"The trend is [...] people more often [...] skip one model." - agree with You that people often skip one generation, I'm also waiting what d400 will bring, as d300 does not provide enough goodies for me to sell my d200 and get the d300. For higher iso and video I got d90 - great second body and with grip it handles almost as good as d200.

I agree with monty and adamz. Now I want to clarify that if I said the D300s wouldn't be something I'd get, I wasn't complaining, I am one of those D300 owners that see's no reason to get this. I agree that such an upgrade is not targeted at me.
However for those who may have a D40, such as my roommate, he is really interested in the possibility of a D300s. I believe it's people like him that Nikon is targeting. Like adamz, I have a D90 as a second body for higher ISO and any video I may want to shoot. At this point, even the D400 would have to have something special that neither of my current body's offer.
I agree that Nikon needs to stay fresh. It's not the first time they've done it either: D40 and D40x, D70 and D70s and how many D2 models were there?

I am not so sure that the D300s rumor has anything to do with reality.
