First post, hello to all. I'm just another lurker that finally went public. I'll be picking up the D7000 eventually, but I just wanted to get an idea of how many people resort to online stores that don't charge tax and offer free shipping, versus buying from the usual big name places ( BH, BB, Adorama, Amazon). When you do the math, the kit (I'm in NYC) comes out to $ 1632.00. I understand the concept of buying from a well known place and the ease of exchange/return with brick and mortar stores, but what do you think? $ 133.00 in tax plus shipping is a lot nowadays. Your opinion is greatly appreciated.
For your purchases, do you use no tax and free shipping online stores?

The online stores are a save for me. I have local stores that i could buy products but being 19 and saving every penny, I just have to go with B&H or some other place that is online. (i live in indiana). I went to my local stores and they try to sell me the products im buying online but i cant justify an extra 150$ for tax when i can wait 3 days and get it online
I feel bad for the local businesses but its just hard to do in my opinion when you have the option of the tax free way.

Technically, you are supposed to claim it on your income tax return and pay a use tax for the sales tax that you aren't paying when you buy online.
That being said, I would say most people buy online to avoid paying the tax, and never actually claim it.

hmmmm.. I never knew that. Well... Ill just have to buy from the local stores now :).

@fargo911 interesting, never once mentioned by my accountant.

In Michigan at least, it is on the state tax return. I don't know how they work it if your state doesn't have an income tax, but I would think they still have some way they expect you to claim/pay a use tax.

In addition to the use tax mentioned by Fargo911, which I believe is in effect in 45 of the 50 states, If a company has a brick and mortar location in the state where it is going to ship the item to, they are required by law to charge sales tax even if it is mail order. Example, if you look at the check out cart for Adorama, they charge tax for New York and New Jersey.

+1 Ron.
I use online stores because there is not any serious camera store within about 250 miles of me.Posted 2 years ago # -
I am a college student in NY so when I pre-ordered my d7000 (Adorama), I had it shipped home to CA. Adorama is just a company that I trust, and being a student, I need to save as much as I can. Picking it up on break, or shipping it back across the country is unfortunately much cheaper than having it sent straight here, or buying it in a store here, if I can find one.
I'll have to check out the income tax thing for CA...

I used to had a company number at B&H (that belonged to my friend, unfortunately he went out of business) that allowed me to do in-store shopping w/o tax, which was very convenient, as I love this shop and the ability to touch every single product before placing Your order. It was very convenient as I was flying to NYC, do the shopping and fly to Chicago (have some relatives there). right now I skip the NYC part, order on-line in advance and just fly to Chicago directly. I understand that taxes are very important, but overhear in Europe once You are foreigner You can do tax free shopping, in States that's impossible AFAIK. and once You wanna spend couple grants 10% makes a big difference.

almost exclusively. . .who the hell would want to pay 6% tax on $10k of purchases!!
Posted 2 years ago # -
6% !!? We pay 8%+ here in good ole Louisiana.

I dodge taxes as a hobby. I just saved $150 off my D7k purchase. Cashback, coupons and no sales tax. I get my camera shipped from New Jersey based store. Feels good. Really good.

Most people do not claim any use tax since it is hard to track and audit, however, North Carolina is currently going after a number of large online retailers, namely Amazon, in an attempt to get records of all purchases sent to North Carolina. Purchases dating as far back as 2003, in attempt to collect use tax. They estimate they are losing $162 million per year. There are law suits to prevent this due to privacy concerns, but North Carlina is saying they do not need the private information and are only trying to collect taxes due. If North Carolina wins, every state will follow suit and you better hang on for a wild ride. You may wish you had been paying use tax.
Kind of like what Clint Eastwood as Harry Callahan said in the movie Dirty Harry
"I know what you're thinking. "Did he fire six shots or only five?" Well, to tell you the truth, in all this excitement I kind of lost track myself. But being as this is a .44 Magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world, and would blow your head clean off, you've got to ask yourself one question: Do I feel lucky? "

Hi all,
Montana has no sales take. Price on the tag is what you pay. It's odd how fast you get acustom to that. When I travel I wince when I don't get the correct change back.
My best to all.
