Hello everyone; Good evening:
I am the proud owner of both D80 and D90 cameras with the original 18-200 VR lens and the new Tamron 18-270 VC lens... I am quite happy with both cameras and lenses...now, I am glimpsing the arrival of the D7000 body, which takes me to my question... Is there a significant difference between the original VR lens and the new 18-200 VR II lens... I mean, are the optics better?, the lens appearance is the same in terms of size and weight? or is it more bulky?... Please let me know your input... Thanks a lot and best regards... Joseph!

I believe there is no difference optically..

No difference optically at all. The only differences are the addition of a lens lock at 18mm to prevent the lens extending when you don't want it to, and the change of the red VR symbol on the top of the lens to gold. Other than that weight and size remain the same too, so no need to feel the need to upgrade!

To my new friend Piarco:
Thank you very much for the info, the urge to consider to upgrade had been destroyed... Best regards... Joseph!

I don't have any hard facts on this, but I thought the newer version had some better focusing ability maybe? I find my 18-200 VR hunts a little, but maybe it is the camera and not the lens.

I have shot them both a lot. There is NO difference optically. I repeat NO difference. I regret buying the second "upgrade" as all I got was a function to reduce lens creep. In fact i suspect my first lens is slightly superior. This was NOT a home run for Nikon. But it was a very popular lens. If I had to by them again, I'd base it simply on price. Also get a return guarantee in case you got a very rare bad one. This simply put is an amazing all around lens. It is one of Nikon's best.

It is my most used lens. But the 12-24 comes in very handy to have on hand also so it is not a do everything lens. I also don't use it much for ultra close. There give me a Micro Nikkor.

Definitely no difference optically. I had the original which was sold about 18 months ago, and recently picked up the updated version at a great price ahead of my D7000 shipping.
I've been using it with my housemates D5000, and it's exactly the same lens as the original bar that barrel lock. EXACTLY the same.Luckily I got it at a great price or I would have picked up an original on eBay without hesitation.
