I'm fairly certain Sun lenses haven't been made since the 50's and were screwtype mounts... so what you mean by "attached", I really don't know because I don't think they can be attached to a d40 or at least with out an adapter. And even then I'm sure the camera would not recognize anything. It would be like sticking a metal pipe on the end of your camera....
I would suggest a newer lens... maybe something that wasn't made around the time that the name "Nikon" was first used.
Update:
You could try "yelling" at the camera, then maybe it would respond to you? (caps sarcasm?)

hiSACHRBROUSSARD
LOL NO ON THE BOX IT SAYS FOR NIKON THATS WAY I GOT IT AND IT DOES TURN SCREW ON JUST LIKE NORMAL LENSE ???ANY OTHER THINGS I COULD TRY..???

Although the lens is made for Nikon, it was made for Nikons 40 years ago. Thus, it is a non-AI lens and a d40 won't recognize it. I think you might still be able to shoot it in full manual mode but I'm not sure.
Again, I would recommend getting a NEW lens.

First push your caps lock button on your keyboard because TYPING IN ALL CAPS MEANS YOU'RE SHOUTING! Put the lens at it's smallest aperture like f22 and leave it there. Then see if you can change the aperture with the camera. If not then you'll only be able to use this lens in "M" manual exposure mode and set the aperture and focus manually through the lens.

perhaps a good first step would be to take a picture of the lens and post it here.
is believe this would solve a lot of the confusion, and make the situation much clearer.
Edit: i found some pictures of said lens here:
check page 162 in particular

I have a Sun 80-300 f/5 from the '80s, and there isn't really any info on SUN on the interwebs...

I'm going by this quick google search result:

But there also seems to be a newer version which still doesn't seem to AF on the D40

So which version of the 85-210mm do you have? The older one or newer one? Which lens did your kid drop? The 85-210? I don't follow which lens is broken.

Hi Super Shooter i have a 18-55 mm lens nikon origanal that got dropped,,the 85-210 lens no.607233 it says use 55mm accesories on the box

If I were you I'd just look for a used 18-55. Even the local, overpriced used shop I'm near has them for $90 all the time. Or send your 18-55 in for repair.
You lens should work fine if you put the D40 in M mode and you set the lens to f22 on the barrel. You will have no metering, though, and will have to choose the shutter speed and aperture settings yourself. Not a big deal for digital since you can see your photo right away.

The camera you have is designed for auto focus, G style (no aperture ring -the ring that reads for example 4 - 22) lens. You can attach almost any Nikon lens but it will not auto-focus or meter properly.
As ShadeofBlue said your best bet is to buy a new 18-55mm VR lens for around $90-$130. Just to send your lens in to Nikon for a cleaning will cost around $120 with shipping and to fix anything will be $160+.

Well, the VR version will be almost $200, I'd just get an old non-VR if you are trying to save money.

our just use any f-mount lens without auto focus, even old non ai lenses, which is one of the things that makes the d40 so cool
