gonna buy this on monday. we'll see how it goes. obviously not up to my d700 and 35 1.4G, but then if it was...

I think it dings the bells of most people who are old enough to have shot SLR's and compacts like the Pen because it is more like photography was back then - simple. The apparent simplicity of it is very attractive but I don't agree that it is a 'pro' cameras as said above, I think it is most likely a triumph of form over function.
Now if Olympus would put a digital back on an OM1, I'd be there. Nobody has ever beat the shutter ring next to the aperture ring IMHO.
2c.

Stop dinging your dongs, both of you!
Fuji will also unveil an all black version of this camera but you guys didn't hear it from me ;^)Posted 2 years ago # -
it's not for me, it's for my pre school. when i leave (as a teacher lol) I will buy one and teach the other staff how to use it. the parents have got used to a high standard of pics and I have raised the money to buy it selling 2000 yen CDs with all of their kids pics for the term on them.
it's perfect for taking pics of kids in a perschool. a little soft at f/2, but set it to f/2 or 2.8, shutter to 1/125 (for the bloddy flourescents), auto ISO and forget about it.

I have been watching this closely and some of the sample High iso images are simply amazing. Lots of customization, very quiet, and very tactile which I love. 3200 seems to be as clean as a D3s and much better than the Leica X1 and 4/3 systems.
I have been picking up some RF gear to try out and shoot film with (since I never have used RFs before) and I'm thinking of selling it all off along with a couple of film cameras to pick one of these up.
@Gareth - I would love to hear what you think of it!

I'm very curious to see how well this works, especially as we are creeping up on its release date. Someone I know keeps talking about how fantastic it is and tries to convince every photographer he meets to get one(he doesn't hide the fact that he hasn't even seen one in person yet). It looks like it has strong potential, but like everything poor ergonomics could ruin the whole thing.

Yay, Gareth graduated from pre-school!
Yen you say? You're working in Japan? That's really cool.

Ive been wanting one but if nikon took Thom's idea of a digi F3 I would buy it in a heartbeart...

Here are the sites I have been following if anyone is interested. There are some High iso examples on flicker. One of the key design elements that Fuji has said about the single focal length is that it has designed the sensor to match the lens. Result? Amazing.

Um...Nikon did make a digital version of the F3. They call it the D3 :^)
So TaoTeJared if Nikon were to sell the exact same camera but call it a COOLPIX would it still be "amazing"?

LOL! I would love it and would get one. I'll always use Nikon DSLRs but anything less than a DSLR I really don't care who makes the tools I use.
I have long ago passed the point of disappointment on Nikon's lackluster attempts at anything under a digital DSLR. They are usually years behind the trend and then release something who's performance is well behind even the mid level of other brands. It's a shame really.

This little Fuji looks just like the Leica M3 I think! Sure looks cool and priced much lower than the Leica X1 which is priced way too high. The Leica X1 costs more than the 5D Mark II and D700! Therefore, at $1500 this little Fuiji sounds reasonable.

I just picked it up and I must say WOW. takes a bit of getting used to as it works very differently to my old powershot and new d700.
I got the black one.
first impressions.
-Now I know why everyone says it looks good. I didn't understand why everyone was going on about the looks, and I don't care that much. But it does look good and feels VERY nice.
-Very easy to adjust manual controls, though at first I wasn't sure where I had to look, I soon worked out how to switch between optical VF, digital VF and digital screen selection.
-With no card it takes a while to write the files. i really should have bought an SD card, but it's not my camera and we have some at work. So tomorrow we will see.
-playback is default to the VF, which is nice is daylight conditions which are hopeless for chimping shots.
-the scroll wheel can be used to over or under expose 2 steps (not full stops) from the shutter speed setting on the top of the camera, allowing minor adjustments without taking your eye off the VF.
- the little lever (yes it's a lever) above the scroll wheel can be used to do the same with aperture.
-macro mode defaults to digital VF, as the optical VF is not TTL (through the lens). it works very nicely.
-hold AE button and scrool to change metering mode.
-hold AF and scroll or press direction to change AF-S AF point. AF point can be made up to twice as large or half as small using the lttle lever. the AF point is clearly show on the rear screen when selecting and dimly in the VF, it's a bit hard to press the AF button when looking through the VF. you are more likely to select a point and then look through AF, though you can do both at the same time if you really want to.
-it seems as though AF-C can only be a central large plus in the middle and cannot be moved. this kind of sucks, but it does adjust constantly, even when shutter button is not pressed.
I just set display to the lcd screen instead of the default VF and that is most likely where it will stay for indoor shooting. the viewfinder is great, but as it is way off from the lens the framing in the optical VF is VERY different to the end result. you can use digital though, which frames the same as the shot. there is very little lag when using the rear screen to compose and shoot. I like it a lot.
The image quality, even at high iso and wide open is outstanding! I will do a comparison to my d700 with 35 1.4G when i get the chance.
overall.
THIS CAMERA IS A DREAM COME TRUE.
makes the pens look like a toy, makes the nex look like a gadget. full points fuji!i really couldn't have hoped to get a better camera for school, the photos will be almost as good after i have left as they are now. they better be bloody greatful considering i fundraised for the camera by doing a lot of photos and processing and get nothing in return!

Very cool Gareth I look forward to seeing some shots from it especially compared side by side to the D700. Take some street and landscape shots please! :)

Wow, nice preliminary review.
Post shots!

You fundraised over a $1000 to buy a "point & shoot" camera for pre-schoolers to use??? No offense but isn't that a bit excessive?
Although it looks like one, the X100 is NOT a rangefinder. The optical viewfinder is just a hole through the camera. Which is a real shame. Also the focus ring isn't mechanical.
Posted 2 years ago # -
Yes some shots would be great!
Posted 2 years ago # -
I would buy this if it was cheaper. With that being said, im 24, ill wait till Nikon comes out with a rangefinder and get that.

It should still have the parallax framing issue like a rangefinder though, right?

Even though it looks like a range finder viewfinder it is not. It is a complex hybrid system that also includes a EVF. It is also 0.5x magnification with 100% coverage.
The micro site describes it well. http://www.finepix-x100.com

it is not for preschoolers to use. it is for the teachers to use taking picutres of the preschoolers. this is basically what I do, take natural photos of children, and I don't think the camera is excessive. it was the only camera I felt certain they would be able to get great photos with.

Be careful Michael Derose I'm glad I didn't wait for anything from Nikon when I was 24. Otherwise it could be 2024 before you get what you want from them! Never wait on anything in the new age of digital especially if it bares the Nikon logo ^^

this should be enough for people to judge. full size jpeg and RAW files from the X100 and the D700 with 35 1.4G at f/2 and f/4.
*Link Removed*
I forgot to say the D700 was set to 12-bit RAW, as the X100 only does 12-bit.
The focus point on the D700 pics is the triangular roof up the top as that was the brightest point and easiest to manually focus on.
