I have been following all of the D7000 threads closely and I do not believe this question has been covered, if so please forgive me.
Those of you who have been buying photog gear and especially "hot" new gear for longer than I have, do you have any idea which may be faster, to pre-order (yes, I know I am very late in the pre-order game on this) from a major retailer like Amazon or Best Buy, or from my local camera shop? Who would you guess may actually have them faster? My local shop has 60 ordered from Nikon (the worker I talked to did not know when they will get them) and only 7 of those are claimed so far.

Believe me, I understand that this will be largely guesswork, I am just curious what your guesses may be.
    Thanks all.

I can't say if it's too late from Amazon. But I can imagine it is. A lot of people ordered off there. I would expect your local Camera shop to get their shipment around the same time, and if only 7 have been claimed from their first shipment... I'd just go with that. and you wouldn't have to worry about shipping. You could conceivably receive one before anyone who has to wait for theirs shipping from Amazon.

I think it's a bit late for the pre-order game on Amazon, although you never know -- they might get theirs earlier than other shops, and they'll probably get more units. That said, you might get lucky with another retailer that's not one of the top tier photography places, and you could get lucky because they won't have as many preorders.

If you are wanting it as soon as possible, you may be better off pre-ordering from more than one place that only charges when they ship. I order almost everything on Amazon because of Prime shipping but in this case I might pick a different retailer because Amazon and B&H probably have the longest wait lists.

Local shops probably are a good bet except the pricing will much much higher with tax.

I haven't seen you around for a few months, Jessi. I hope it's been a good year with lots of photos.

I think it's a good sign if your local shop can get 60 in their first order. Nikon has to know that the D7000 is going to be a winner.

Thanks everyone, I appreciate your two cents.
JA - Its been a great year for me, photo and otherwise! I am ready to upgrade from the D60 so that must be a good sign, right?
Anyway, I am still here on the forum, its just that when baby #3 came along a year ago, my computer time took a nose dive! Time to read, not to engage in discussion :)
Anyway, thanks all for your guesses!

I wonder if Bestbuy will sell the body only without the kit.

Good question! Did they ever sell the D90 as body-only?

BestBuy sells kits in their stores and body-only through their website. They make more money on the kits so I don't think well see body-only for a while.

So I finally got enough cash, you think Adorama would be too late to pre-order from too?

I semi have a deal with a local camera shop about getting one when they come in but they have no idea if Nikon will ship them any first since they are a fairly small shop.

Also I had some unexpected expenses so paying tax should be avoided if possible.

I know NewEgg sells bodies, do you think they will sell the D7000 body only?

By now the big chains and online stores have long lists of backorders. You would be best served by going to a local camera store who has a much smaller list, maybe none at all, and order it from there. The other option is your Best Buy store. Best Buy gets the largest shipment from Nikon USA since they are Nikon's largest customer. They will use some of the shippment to fill the orderes online, but they'll also ship a supply to the retail stores as well. Since Best Buy has a contractor come in and set-up floor displays, there is usually a week between the arrival of stock, and when the floor model is on the shelf. That is the week you want to buy, you just have to keep trying, and ask someone in the store if they arrived yet.

    FYI
\I just ordered a D7000 Kit from Adorama about 5 minutes ago. When I called I asked first about when they expected to stock them. He came back with Oct 17th. Then I asked about when I could expect one if I ordered today. He said right away but then paused and backtracked. He asked whether I wanted a Kit or Body only. I said Kit, and he said I should be able to get it right away since the had "only" 24 orders for the kit, while the Body only was well over 100 orders.

Hrm, if I sell my Tokina 80-400 for dirt cheap, I could possibly swing the Kit package, how much does the 18-105 sell for used?

Refurbished ones sell for about 250-270.

I'm sure you could get around 230-270 if you wanted to sell off the kit lens. But it won't be the 300 they're charging you for it. But hey it's worth a try.

Hrm somehow if I went that route and could sell off the 18-105 for $250, I'd make 50$.

If the 17-22 date holds true, when would be the last day to pre-order? 15th?

I have no idea, but I guess they'll close it when they start shipping it on the 17th or reach capacity which could be conceivably before the 15th. However, they would have to make a note distinguishing that capacity has been reached and the orders be moved to backorder. And they'll just have regular ordering options afterwards or backorder ordering options there after until they receive a surplus.

But I could be completely wrong ;P

Hmmm I am 100$ short of 1200$ but I get paid on the 14th however I could borrow 100$ from someone. Just don't know if it's worth the hassle at this point.

Sounds like you're broke and maybe need to prioritize some other things depending on your budget.... Maybe a camera isn't justifiable right now at that price point.

Haha. No the problem is I do have a budget. This 100$ short thing is because it isn't the 14th yet and I can't transfer another 100$ to my photography budget.

Now if I was able to sell my Tokina 80-400, this wouldn't be a problem but people are dumb and keep asking if it works with their entry level cameras or asking to trade it for dumb things.

You do realize that with tax the total comes up to $1300.

That is if I decide not to get it online, either way on the 14th I'm covered.

But the point is, if it's worth pre-ordering this so late if it's going to be in stores the 17th.

Just because it hits stores doesnt mean youll be able to walk in and buy one up right away. First shippments of hot items always sell out fast and there is no guarantee on when exactly all preorders will ship or how long itll be in stock at Best Buy. The D300 and D700 were "in stock" online for only a few hours at a time until demand fell after a few months.

I don't sleep. I'll be ready to pounce if it comes to that.

Only thing now is, I need to figure out how much the battery grip will cost since it's being released the same day. If it's 200$ or under I'll be a happy camper.

So you can't pre-order from B&H anymore, does that mean it's shipping soon or did they run out?

Good point. I just made a second preorder at my out of state store and the total cam to be $1185 for body only. Now it said that the shipping will be in November.

I preordered on Amazon within first 15minutes of the announcement being made so I was hoping that I would be one of the first ones to get it.

Now I think I will cancel my preorder from Amazon, since I am a cheapass. it pisses me off that the out of state store didn't have a preorder option when the announcement was made, which made me order it from Amazon instead, thus acquiring a stupid tax charge.
