That would not work as a spammer can just post on any thread. They are sneaky some join and wait a few months before they post others try to post for real and sneak junk in.

I also support the idea of not allowing new members to start topics. would certainly cut off some of the spammers.
@framer - knowing how many posts mods delete, I can assure Your that majority of them are as other suggested. though I also like the idea of adding captcha to registration form.

I used captcha for a few years and it work fine. Then about two years ago the spammers got a robot that could read the captcha and overnight my 5 - 10 per day registrations swell to over 100 per day. 95% spammers. That's when I closed registration for a few weeks. I then added a script to ask a question of my choice. I just have to change the question monthly to keep the robots out. I'm down to one or two spammer posts per week to deal with out of 500-2000 post per week. The board size is just under 14,000 members and 800,000 posts since 1998. The board is for professional picture framers.

"Please add sex and tin" Then give an answer list of twelve, 12, 14, sexteen, sixteen, 9teen, etc., and have the person type in one from the list. Course one has to be born in the Southern United States to understand this, but.... or, "how does one bowl an egg?" Roll it down a bowling alley? No, place it in water, heat the water to boiling for three minutes.....
