Nikon is going to replace this and any other lens with a new version eventually and there is nothing you can do about it.
If you are shooting in the good light with speeds above 1/500, or using support like tripod or monopod this lens is very good choice for the price. VR version of this lens will come up eventually but will be much more expensive, and again there is nothing you could do about it.
The real question is what do you want to do with this lens?

indeed mb is right, sooner or later there will be a new 300/4 with VR but so far no one knows when, if You want to buy such a lens than You can also consider Sigma 100-300 (same price range, but with focus and surprisingly very good lens) or Sigma 120-300/2.8 or 300/2.8 both for +/- $3k
