I was going to upgrade (Or downgrade depending on who you ask) my D5000 with a D3100 because of the autofocus video which is very important to me.

With all this talk of the d7000 I thought I would wait for a bit and see what becomes of the d7000. It looks liked the price tag will be high at over $1,0000 - body only . So what is between the d3100 and the d7000? One would think there would be an upgraded D5000. From what I understand the D5000 is being discontinued and the 3100 will be the replacement. So do you all think the only real consumer choice for a Nikon DSLR will be the 3100 and 7000?

Keep your D5000 and invest in better glass and just wait another year at least before you "upgrade". There's nothing wrong with the D5000 and it is a totally capable camera.

If he really wants AF video though, maybe in his case it doesn't make sense. Obviously for most of us investing in glass makes more sense, but remember different people have different needs.
I'm assuming if af video is important for you benalexe, you are more interested in just shooting things/people around you for enjoyment and not work (also the fact that you called the d7000 body expensive, which it is for me too, but I'm using it as a reference point to your photo standards, makes me think you probably don't have a large glass selection as this may not be something important to you right now).

I like to extrapolate and make assumptions :) As always let me know if I'm wrong. Based on my assumptions, if I were in your position I would consider going to the 3100, but I would wait on full reviews first.

foofiebeast - You hit it head on. I am by no means a pro but like to take photos of the familyg and kids. I like video as well and editing. I only have 2 lenses- Nikon 18-105 and sigma 70-300 non vr- apo (A cheap lense but works for me)
