I was wondering whether now would be a good time to jump on the old 85mm 1.8D given that the new 85mm 1.4 is being released.

I know that the price of the old 85mm 1.4 will probably drop more dramatically than the 1.8 which hasn't been replaced and is a different lens for a different market, but maybe I can save a few pennies by waiting a few months. (c:

With a new 85 anything out, it'll force down the price of that focal range as people will be dumping their 85 1.4's and 1.8's in favor of the "faster" AF 85 1.4G.

Just be on the look out - best bet is ebay, but then you might have questionable reliability since not everyone is honest on there.

Just my inkling, but because of the price of the new lens I doubt there will be a big rush for it if you already owned one of the other 85mm lenses. Also there was already the older 85 f1.4 lens so I don't think it will be much of a change on the 85 1.8 as the older 85 1.4. The price difference is just a big one so I would think they kind of fall in different categories. I don't think people that originally got the $400 85 f1.8 are going to jump on the $1700 85 f1.4 when there was A) already an 85 f1.4 out that they didn't buy and B) they wouldn't gain a whole lot from it....just my $.02

I would think anytime is a good time to buy that lens. I love it! ;-)

I don't think Nikon will be updating the 1.8 version anytime soon, they take their sweet time on things like that.

Well, I meant the 1.8 because that's what the OP asked about. I haven't used the 85 1.4 but I'm guessing it's at least as good.

Check Photozone.de and you will find that the 85mm 1.8D is one of the finest lens that they have tested, and I have found that out in fact.

bought the 1.4 - got it used, and in fairly good shape. Had to autocorrect (+10), but relish the bokeh over the 1.8 examples i saw. . .it's a big f'er though. . .
