Things are really heating up now.

To be honest I am now looking at the new Sony a55. Obviously there are so many factors with that camera (The new translucent mirror thing, how the sensor performs iso wise, etc.) but at a price of possibly nearly half of what the d7000 may be, and with possibly the same sensor (although obviously not with nikon's tweaking) it will be something I will have to actually look in to.

I've been very excited about the d90 replacement, and about being able to use my nikkor glass natively, but if this a55 performs surprisingly well I might have to look at just getting an adapter ring (which really won't be that different for me because most of my glass is pretty old, so it's all manual for me anyway)

I wish (obviously...) Nikon would hurry up and get us the deets on the d7000!

I strongly disagree with those saying D300/300s body may be dropped/discontinued . I find the D300 to be the most ergonomic design/ideal size and the most logical choice for those who can not afford the FF bodies ( not only the FF bodies but also what has to come with them - expensive lenses ) .

Kill the D300 and you are left with an unsatisfied group of serious pro-amateurs ( serious hobby shooting & stock & wedding, etc ) who have been hanging on to the DX format . With which camera is this group supposed to live with if the D300/s is gone ?? A smaller D90 level body ?? Forget it ; isn't body size & ergonomy & ease of controls the main reason people upgrade to D300 from D90 ??

I can't imagine the full Nikon line consisting of only :

    the entry level D3100
    the D7000 ( replacing both Nikon D90 & D300 )
    D700
    D3x/s

( You can add the D5000 there - makes no difference - but I think that is the one to be discontinued )

    Nikon , don't touch my D300 !! :-)

Do the specs of the D7000 really sound like a "hobby" camera? Sounds more like a "prosumer" to me.

definitely sounds like prosumer, and if they release d7000 with the specs we all seen, than I guess there's going to be a change in the whole nikon lineup. I simply can't imagine having d5000, d3100 and d7000, d400 (the first two are too close to each other, and what advantage will have d400 when You add all "goodies" to d7000)

The body size/ergonomy/ease of controls and that's more than enough for me. That's why people preferred the D300 over the D90 .

Whatever the difference between D90 & D300s was , is likely to remain the same between the new replacements of each .

I'll get a used D90 when it drops to around $500....will it happen this year?

Then in 2012, I'll get the D90 replacement replacement :)

Bingo, that is exactly why I moved from the D90 to D300. The external controls of the D300 are dream to use in comparison to the consumer bodies, IMO.

They sell for around $500-600 now on ebay. If it's replaced that will probably go down, but not by much. Not a bad strategy there.

Paperman, what if the D7000 has the D300-style body? Is that the only thing keeping you from believing the D90/D300s might be replaced together? If the viewfinder coverage is 100% like the rumor says, then that implies that the body is bigger than the D90. I could be happy with in between, but I agree with you and Rob that the D200/D300 ergonomics are nearly perfect.

Or that the magnification is lower.
Prism Box Size = Sensor Size * Coverage * Magnification

Now, before anyone asks, the D3100 sensor is smaller than the D3000 sensor, but not enough to turn a 95% coverage viewfinder into a 100% coverage viewfinder w/o also modifying one of the other variables.

We wouldn't be talking about the D90 replacement then, would we - if the new body turned out to be a D300 size one ? One way or another , there would/should have been implications / rumors in the market that the upcoming replacement is to D300s - rather than the D90 .

I'm not saying the Dx00 line is dying off I'm saying it might switch over to full frame like the D1series did (D2X-D3). The D700 is already proof of that. The D100 series has always been a "baby" D1 series camera. Why do you think the D3 and D300 were announced together? The D300 was given the "same" sensor as the D2X so why not move the D3 sensor down with the "D400"? Oh that's right because they already have and called it the D700!

so what could a "D400" offer over the D7000? A few extra AF points and external controls and that's it? The reason the D90 is so popular is that it has a "better" sensor and a much cheaper price compared to the D300. It's a much better bargin. Imagine if the D90 were metal and had a "better/ equal" sensor than the D3. A lot like what the D7000 could offer soon. In today's market the D300 is just too over priced for what it offers.

Niko, I agree that d300 was too over priced in comparison to d90, but I think that d300s is worth the additional $$$, especially when You shoot with manual glass and like the possibility of dual memory slot and fine tunning. that's why I think that if d7000 will have the rumored specs it's gonna be the highest dx camera, and DXXX will be reserved for full frame.

There is a lot to be said for having external controls. The consumers bodies are nice, but still you need to dive into menus to change focus settings (single dynamic etc). If I'm shooting different kinds of action on the same shoot I only have seconds to change modes, the D300's controls make the possible, while with the D90 I just missed the shot. The D90 replacement would have to have a lot of improvements in terms of buttons and dials to replace the D300s.

Sure but are those few extra external controls worth $800 dollars? I'd rather buy a lens for that and learn to live with the occasional menu hunting!

If you are a working professional it could mean the difference between getting paid or not, so yeah $800 may be worth it.

I can't imagine Nikon taking an advanced DX camera off their line-up . They are already competing with 4 models only ( 3 actually - I consider the D5000 dead with the new D3100 ) where Canon has 6-7 and Sony comes up with 4 new ones every 6 months .

It is not wise of Nikon to force D300s users to step up to FF by not leaving any rigid/pro-style ergonomy/serious hobbiest prosumer DX camera . ( Where is the money ? ). They can't expect any DXXX users to go down to an amateurish body - D7000 or whatever the D90 follow up is - either ...

It is not the specs, the sensor, the speed, the processor, etc that counts . It is the body size & ergonomy & ease of controls /extra buttons when it comes to impressing/ attracting that group of photographers ...

My guess is the pro consumer bodies like the D300 series will become FF FX format in the $1800 range called the D400. It's my belief that all DX will be consumer types. That's why no more DXXX until they come out with lower cost FF designs. They don't want to release that body until the D700 sales run is complete and it's looking that way. I expect the D400 to be every bit as good as the D700 and then a new middle of the road will follow D800 that even better than the D700 but less than the D3s-x.

I think there is still lot of milk left in the pro-sumer DX caw . The (affordable digital ) SLR was reborn only a few years ago and the beginners of 2-3 years ago are just switching to the prosumer DX phase ) . It is still too early to convert the serious DXist to full frame while he can still be milked with the in-between product.

Not to mention that there are many wildlife/sports photographers that like DX cameras, and I'm not just talking about hobbyists. Also, if the new FX low cost cameras is more like a D90/D7000 control wise, it might not get that segment of users either. Nikon could potentially lose users to the 7D and eventual D7 MKII.

Hmm. By the sounds of all these angry posts: People seem to be far too attached to the professional knob, and dislike the "default shooting options" the consumer body gives.

If Nikon would invent a D9k (DX), same specs as the D7k, with a Pro-Knob and programmable back, they'd pay $800 extra. Easy cash!

If you are a working pro then you're going to be using a D700 or D3. The only reason a "pro" wouldn't is because they don't have the money. The D7000 might fill that spot by offering D700 performance in a new "advanced" amateur camera. If Nikon makes a full frame "D400" then they tab into another big group of photogs that are ready to go full frame but they can't afford the cost of a $3000 dollar body only.

The D7000 will finally bring FX image quality to a DX camera. Imagine what the image quality of the next generation of FX sensors is going to be like!

Agreed. If people are willing to pay $800 dollars for two or three extra buttons then why complain about a new lens that's only $200 more then that?

Sorry Niko, but not every pro can afford a D700 or D3. If you work in a studio the difference between those cameras is minimal at best.

What you fail to realize is that there is more than just a few buttons and knobs that differentiate the D90 and D300s. If that is what you believe you must not have used a semi-pro camera enough to know the difference.

Trust me PB I work with pros all day so yeah I do know the difference! And not a single Pro I've met shoots with anything other than a D3, 1D, 5D or D700. On rare occasions I will come across someone using a D300 as back up but most use the D700.

Anyway... This thread is about the D7000 and not about how many external buttons make a camera a " pro" model. Or who knows more working pro photographers.

@ PB and Niko...this is what I was getting at in my previous post. My main camera is my D200. I was all set to get a D700 and use the D200 as my back-up. In the studio, my D200 is fantastic, but the other half of what I do is location available light and at ISO 800 it is just o.k. I would love the low light ability of the D700, but back in May, I was in the hospital and right now I can't afford a new D700 with all the hospital bills. If the D700 replacement would ever come out, I'd look into the D700 if the price dropped. Right now though, what is my best option as far as low light performance...used D700, or D7000, or what? I know nothing about the D90, D300s as far as low light is concerned.

Also, does anyone have any idea how all of these options would compare price wise?
