Based on the specs, I will say that Nikon has done a great job on the entry level 3100.

I was in Manhattan and looked in on the Sony store and then went online and checked the specs for the to be released A380, because of the built in image stabilization and 16M pixels, I would say that the Sony is an even better entry level camera.

I was around when the Canon AE1 was introduced and the competition between the companies really made for some good equipment.

I hope Nikon rises to the challenge with their D700 replacement, but from the looks of Sony's releases, I think they have their work cut out.

Question, since I'm not too familiar with Sony's gear: do they have built-in AF motors, and will they work with legacy lenses (assuming Minolta, since Sony basically absorbed the company)? If they do, that certainly makes things interesting...

The a380?!? That camera has already been replaced! How can it be better than the just announced D3100?!? The a380 had a 14mp CCD sensor with crappy ISO performance and even crappier ergonomics. It's replacement the a390 isn't any better. YUCK! The D3100 has nothing to worry about. Now the A33 and A55 might but up a fight but they are going to be more expensive and come with electronic instead of optical viewfinders.

Dellaaa if you're going to "troll" again at least get your facts straight!

Sorry you are right its the A580, I made a typo.

The bigger question Nikodoby is this, why is any comparison slammed as a troll?

It was a an obvious typo and a valid question.

    Grow up already.

Because all of your post are always "Nikon sucks and canon, sony, pentax, Holga are better". For example your past post have included such troll titles as,"GETTING FED UP WITH NIKON, ANYONE ELSE??","Talk about a let down......where's the beef???", etc. etc. And besides I seem to remember you said you were leaving this forum because it was full of Nikon "fanboys" but yet here you are again saying the "a380" is a better than the D3100.

As for the a580 it's not even an entry level camera. It's closer to the D90 so I don't understand why you're putting it up against the entry level Nikon. The next D90 will blow the doors off of the a580.

Honestly, your "comparsion" didn't look peaceful to me, but quite opposite.

A380 uses CCD sensor right ? and D3100 uses CMOS .this itself is a big difference in my opinion.

just keep in mind if you're thinking of buying D3100 that it doesn't have AEB .

When shooting events I cross paths with many photographers and we're always talking shop and etc. When I cross paths with someone shooting a Sony they always say the same thing and that is, "I wish I had bought a Nikon or Canon instead".

A common complaint of these Sony DSLR owners is the quality of their jpeg.
