I think the D5000 will come down in price so that'll help sell a few too.

Studio, I just thought of something else to consider about niko's suggestion to wait for the d90 replacement. The d3100 has the lower-res screen (230k dots) and the new d90 will have at least the same as the d90's 920k dot screen. If the d3100 handles MF well (and it ought to as a video machine) then it could be a non-issue. What I mean is they should make it a single button press to zoom to actual pixels while in live view so you can check focus. But will they?

Yeah, I'd like to say I came up with it, Drab. ;-)
It's on the Sony NEX-5. I'm sure they were looking ahead to using the Minolta lenses in manual focus with an adapter. I've got an F-mount adapter for mine, though, and it's really a nice feature. It turns on automatically with their AF-S type e-mount lenses in a mode called dynamic manual focus (DMF): it autofocus and if you turn the focus ring, it zooms in on the selected AF spot to help you focus manually.
Edit: what someone needs to do is something like a live histogram but for focus. You would have a box that defines an area in the image in which the "sharpness" is constantly calculated using the same algorithm that the contrast-detected AF uses (no extra computation required!) and puts a single number up on the screen that the operator can watch and maximize while adjusting focus. The maximum possible number wouldn't have any useful meaning because it would change depending on the situation, but this would be so useful—especially in daylight when the LCD is almost impossible to read.

Sony cameras have had that feature for a long time jonny. The zoom to focus I mean.

The D3100 sounds like a good lightweight camera for traveling for a geiser like me with back problems. I just wish it had a higher res screen.

I am planning to order it from wolfcamera, thy are offering 699 $,will that be a good deal..moreover is it safe to buy such stuff online as its not so common in India.. please help!

Hello Gautam and welcome to the forum.
I've never purchased a camera from overseas but I buy online from various US retailers and haven't had a major problem yet. As long as you stay away from "too-good-to-be-true" prices you should be OK.
B&H Photo, Adorama, Ritz, Calumet, and other major retailers. B&H Photo and Adorama do lots of international business. Amazon has the D3100 for $699 and they also do preorders so you might want to go with them.
You can research online store ratings here:

@NikoDoby
Thanks a lot mate!
I am just going place an order and it will be shipped to FL to my friend,so the question of international shipping does not arrive.I just wanted to know whether its secure and reliable.
Another thing,I want to experiment with colour filters, any suggestion?

Correction: question does not arise...
LOL

This is where NikoDoby would refer you to the forum's search function to find a thread that's more on-topic... which I guess I've just done. :)
However.
There are several pages worth of information off this site as well. The sites for Hoya, Tiffen, and Schneider-Kreuznach have tips and -- even more helpfully -- photos showing what the filters actually do. To further complicate things, you can also experiment with gels on your strobe, and if you use those in conjunction with color lens filters, things can get interesting. :)

Why not just ship it directly.. ..

Does anyone know when reviewers will get their hands on this? I'd love to see a review before I preorder.

Welcome to the forum Baytastic. There aren't any "full" reviews yet, just some initial hands-on with the D3100. We usually get some "real" reviews a few weeks after it goes on sale. Maybe sooner if dpreview.com already has a production version of the camera.
But here are some initial impressions

Thanks for the hands-on links, NikoDoby. And thanks for the welcome!
I was under the impression that tech sites got the camera early to do their thing with it, but maybe I've just followed too many smartphone releases in the past! I'm really eager to see some feedback on this camera; it'll be my first venture into the world of DSLR's (and really, the world of photography).

Well sometimes they do get early production models (dpreview) but for the most part manufacturers don't release anything until right before or right after the cameras go on sale.

Here's a picture taken at ISO 3200.

Is it's high ISO better than a D90?
Posted 2 years ago # -
That ISO3200 shot looks like it is at least as good as the D90 at ISO1600, assuming that sample hasn't had some heavy noise reduction applied in post.

"Nikon D3100 will not have manual ISO setting in video mode . . . " --NR blog; 5 September 2010.
You've got to be kidding.

looks descent. . .maybe a stop better than the D90, so I would say we're in for some interesting pre-photokina announcements with the D90 sucessor (which will have to be better than the D3100 at the minimum, I'd hope. . .)
