I've seen a some and they look pretty good, but they were "real world" shots and not pictures of brick walls or test charts.

Maybe it's too early to ask this question, but is it fair to compare the performance of this lens to the 24-70mm f/2.8? I am looking to replace my 18-105 DX lens and I don't need to go as wide as f/2.8 if it saves me some money. But I've heard the optical performance of the 24-70 is really good. If this new lens performs closely to the 24-70 @ f/4, then maybe I won't have to stretch myself to get the 24-70 f/2.8.

I'd still get the 24-70 but because I like bright lenses.

I'm opening this up again to see anyones thoughts who has purchased it.

i'm still sticking with 24-70. . .I've heard the 28-300 is supremely better and frankly if I'm going an all in one ,would rather get one with larger reach. . .

Apparently Moose Peterson really likes this lens too.

Maybe he should be a Nikon spokesman. Not to say it's a bad lens, but it's awfully close to the price of the 28-300.

I've had one for about 5 weeks now and it's superb on a D300, sharp even in the corners, I did a few comparison shots with other lenses I have such as the 14-24mm @ 24mm and the 70-300mm from 70 to 120 and it is comparable in sharpness. It also has good contrast and has no lens creep like my 18-200 VR had; I prefer a constant aperture to variable ones.
The only review that I have read that is negative is Ken Rockwell's, but he can be wrong sometimes IMHO.
I can see why some people would prefer the 28-300 for the extra reach, it depends on what other lenses you already own.

Rich - JB How difficult is it to get any bokeh on the lens - especially zoomed out?
I saw the Moose's comments before - I wonder if there is a lens he doesn't like ;)-
Ken Rockwell...I like his humor but he can be a walking contradiction in his likes and dislikes. He seems to love the all-in-ones. I do respect him though.Personally I can not stand variable zooms and the 28-300 or the 18-200 make my stomach turn.

All of my pictures up till this point have been landscapes but I thought this was unfair for me to answer so in the interest of this forum I decided to just take a few in my garden as it's a nice sunny day. My method and observations purely for a bokeh comparison with my other lenses, I set my camera on a tripod facing approximately 20 degrees from the Sun so the background has plenty of highlights. I took the first picture with the 24-120 at f4 and at approximately 105mm. I swapped this lens with my 105mm F2.8 micro Nikkor and took the same picture with the same settings. I then repeated this at an f5.6 aperture and also moved the tripod back a couple feet and tried a similar shot using my 70-300mm VR at approximately 105mm. Comparing the images in Bridge, I cannot easily detect any difference in the bokeh, the out of focus highlights from all three lenses are very nicely rounded and don't look bad to me. For camera settings in my D300, everything is set at neutral, with just +1 sharpening in camera.
I am still amazed at the sharpness of this lens, it has lots of punch and I can thoroughly recommend it.
I read Ken Rockwell as well as Thom Hogan of the two of them I know who I put more trust in ;-)

long time looker here, but i register just for this post.
I have been eyeing on this lens since its very similar to 24-105L Canon when i still use Canon.
done some research, found a thread from DPreview forum, some people actually sold their 24-70 for this lens, (those who don't need the speed but wants the range) and claim the IQ coming from these 2 are very close.
also i ask this question on a local forum asking how this lens compare to the Canon 24-105L:

I have a friend who has just bought a Canon 24-105L the prints he has shown me are really soft, so much so that I have suggested to him that he does a proper sharpness test whilst he still has time to return it. He is an awkward old cuss and seldom takes my advice so I am going to propose to him that he lets me take some test shots; I am hoping then to compare them directly with the tests I did when I first bought my lens. I followed a video taking pictures of a coke can with the camera mounted on a tripod and a heavy bean bag on top the camera with the mirror up. On my lens it falls off in sharpness at f4 and 50mm plus, but it's great from f5.6 to f16. I mainly shoot landscapes and f8 works great for me, I use a monopod mostly and have found the VR to be a big benefit.
Next year I am hoping to upgrade to FX if Nikon release a D800 or similar so with that in mind I have been buying lenses to suit.
I wish I knew someone with an FX Nikon but if you ever wondered where in the world all the Canon's end up, I can tell you it's in South Wales :-)Rich.

I have just come across a good in depth review of the Nikon 24-120 f4 lens here:
http://mansurovs.com/nikon-24-120mm-vr-review
It is the best review regarding the depth that the author goes to and the quality of his pictures to show various aspects of the lens. He directly compares it to the 24-70mm lens and also a mention of the 28-300mm lens. So it should help anyone sitting on the fence and trying to decide which lens to get.

Thanks for the link, Rich. You're not kidding that's in-depth.
This lens just went from the top of my "to buy" list to...well...the top of my "to buy" list.Posted 2 years ago # -
Fingers crossed Santa will be kind to you Jonny ;-)

Had one for over a month now
I use on a D700 and mostly at f4
it is my most used lens the results are superb
some vignetting but that can be corrected in LR3
although adobe have yet to release a profile for this lensPosted 2 years ago # -
Any more DX shooters get this new 24-120mm f/4 VR lens yet. I have a love/hate relationship with my 16-85mm f/3.5-5.6 VR lens. It can be sharp but slow to find focus in dimmer situations. I also don't know if I'm getting the detail that I really want in the images beyond 60mm. Trying to find a more economical, albeit still pricey, option to the 24-70mm f/2.8. Thanks

Have any of you used this 24-120mm f4 lens for night or indoor concert shots? If so how was its performance? Thanks!
Posted 1 year ago # -
Bland
I have not used it for concerts, but just about everything else
with a D700 ISO 1600 or even 32000 @ f4 it works well in poorly lit venuesPosted 1 year ago # -
Thanks, sevencrossing! I was hoping to hear that.

bought this a few days ago and with my D700 I am loving it. Easy to carry round. Very happy with performance and focus.

I also don't know if I'm getting the detail that I really want in the images beyond 60mm.I'm finding it has its limits and that is one of them. It shoots good to 124mm but it does lose some detail starting at mid range. It also has a problem at focusing beyond 50ft when shooting at 124mm but I'm sure every lens has its limits.
That said, it's my favorite lens. Action and low light shooting is incredible.
I shot all of these with it yesterday using the D7000. I was really pleased with how it shot indoors.

I've been on the fence for this lens since it came out.
How durable is it? The old one was not much at all.

Kmtn, new member is asking "Every store in the US seems to be out of stock on this lens. Anyone know where I can find one?"
