Lets give our "expert analysis" of the new 85mm f1.4 lens in this thread. Give your praise or rant. Who's getting one and who's getting the older and cheaper 85mm f1.4 instead?

    Specs
Nikkor AF-S 85 f/1.4 G with Nano coating (€1650/$1650): 10 lens elements in 9 groups (the old version has 9 elements in 8 groups)

Official announcement "should" be tonight around midnight New York time.

Expert analysis of a lens no one has seen.. LOL are we doing a KR ! :-)

OK i think that it will be great and any serious FF portrait shooter will have to get one!

I think the nano coating, justifies a new price of only $1500 ($300 more), but who knows, those extra elements and groups. . .

This just confirms my thoughts abut Nikon and VR.

If your lens is 2.0 or faster, doesn't matter how long it is, NO VR.

If your lens is 4.0 or faster, VR can and more than likely WILL be considered.

Since I don't own an 85 1.4, I might consider this. . .I'll wait for the bokeh reviews though, because I can only see it "replacing" my portrait shots with the 70-200 VR2, and right now, I'm hard pressed to find anything more sharp or beautiful!

:-) I meant seen through it and touched and felt its weight and interaction with the camera of their choice... Shot a few test shots at various apertures. Maybe even smelt and tasted it :-)

What about the 200 f/2 VR?

Who thinks the 85mm f/1.4D will stick around after the new version is released? They have kept the 50 1.4D and the 60 2.8D Micro for now...

Yup! Your assumptions sound spot-on, shiva. Now that I know that the coming AF-S Nikkor 85mm f/1.4 will be sans VR, I can now "safely" buy that AF DC-Nikkor 105mm f/2.0D lens I've been yearning for since the dawn of time.

I have had the 85 1.8 both in AF and D and think that are both just awesome sauce. The $1700 price tag puts this behind my other big buys but the 85 just rules for portrait work. It would be nice to see the 1.8 revamp but a 1.4 just increased the value of my 1.8 now :)

This one just came into my lens wish list:

    #1 70-200 2.8 VR2
    #2 24-70 2.8
    #3 85 1.4 < new to list :)
    #4 something wide ;)

Oh dear... now I have to choose between this and the 24mm f/1.4. I hate dilemmas like these :(

Me too, but i think I will go with the 24mm F1.4 as I already have the 70-200mm VR2

I don't really have to choose...I can't afford any of them :P Nikon needs some more lenses that are better then kit lenses, but sub $1000 range. It makes the lenses somewhat untouchable to people that don't make money off of their photography...or me at least.

    +1

Agreed! Every lens I'm planning to acquire is $1,000 on up.

I have actually really been thinking about one of the macro lenses. The 60 2.8, 85 3.5 and the 105 2.8 to add. I think this lens would have been more appealing to me if it was a f2.8 and around $800 or so. I guess I can kind of see it falls in another range for Nikon making it a f1.4, but every time they divide the f-stops in half the price doubles.

LOL but thats good value! cos if you divide the Fstop by half you get 4x the surface area and 8x the volume of glass! :-)

Instead of recommending the D90 with an f1.8 35mm lens to everyone and their mother that asks "which camera/lens should I get", I will now only recommend the D3100 with an f1.4 85mm lens :^)

My mind keep Pushing me to grab this baby,
But what I don't understand is..this version no ED , no VR 2 just a tiny piece of nano and afs added, for me is over priced tooo much.
Do u guys think the image quality will be big different?
Hope to see the result as soon as possible , I can't decide

not that impressed with the bokeh from the sample images - honestly, the 70-200II has creamier bokeh IMO. . .

It'll be a low-light whore for sure, but I think the older model, though clearly slower in focusing and more prone to CA/flare, might be a steal for budget shooters. . .
