Let's put all of the praise, rants, and overall reaction of the new D3100 in here. In case you just found this forum here are the semi-official specs of the new D3100

* 14 MP CMOS Sensor (23.2 x 15.5 mm)
* live View
* Continuous AF in video mode/live view
* 3 inch Display (not swivel)
* 100 – 12800 ISO
* ISO setting manual or automatic
* 11 AF points
* new AF points configuration which should cover a very large portion of the viewfinder
* full HD Video (1920 x 1080)
* HD video: 1080p/24 and 720p 30/24
* AVCHD video codec
* new EXPEED2 processor
* improved objects recognition for the AF control
* improved in-camera menu
* user can save picture profiles
* in camera video editing capabilities
* 3 fps
* price 650 €
* will be sold in a kit with a 18-55mm lens

The official announcement "should" be made tonight around midnight New York time.

If these are the specs for the "entry-level" camera, it's going to be very interesting to see the specs for the D90 replacement. This also looks like it addresses some of the complaints that people had about the 3000...

my lord, the D95 will whoop ass, and the D4 will be AWESOME!

Studio will finally get his pro body with manual movie editable features!!

I think Nikon wisened up and realized that the T2i/T1i/7D are selling like hot cakes and they need to undercut the pricing and features of BOTH.

With continuous AF, they defintely have. . .just don't know if they've lost too much market share already. . .most consumers don't jump around from one to the other. . .

These are definitely good specs on paper, the D40 and D50 were great cameras when they came out, but subsequent iterations have not been as evolutionary as they once were.

That might change. :D

Yes those specs are impressive especially considering the fact that its an entry level camera! wow..I agree with you aslightdelay the D90 specs are going to be amazing. How could you then follow up with a D700 replacement then? Answer is probably nothing for FX until sensor changes in the flagship model.

Hey everyone. I will be blogging leading up to and after the announcement tonight. I blog for a Camera store in NJ named Unique Photo. NR Admin has posted a few of our reviews in the review section, and there will be more to come as all of these new products are announced for Photokina and beyond...

I am not trying to say I am a source or anything, I will be refreshing and getting my information from NR and the Nikon USA page frequently tonight and blogging the new updates with my take on them. The best praise I can give for this update is that it really does look like the video will be an H.264 video codec (AVCHD). I'm talking about the main blog post about ViewNX, which seems to confirm the AVCHD video rumor. I'm kind of in love with AVCHD right now from using my NEX-5. I need to get a Blu-ray player that will play AVCHD from DVDs; I tried it on my dad's player and the quality is excellent.
Also, if it's the same sensor as the NEX-5, it's amazing.
Aren't the announcements sometimes at 11pm Eastern?

Ha! Well . . . "yes" and "no." I promised myself that my next body would be an FX-only purchase. Although, I would love to buy a D3100 and start making movies right away, it would be difficult to justify buying both: one FX-body for stills, one DX-body for movies. I'm so salivating at the prospect of shooting all-FX stills soon, but I fear the wait for a 1080p24-enabled FX body from Nikon is still a long, long way away.

Yes. Finally! (I just talked to yet another person at work who just bought a 7D). Nevertheless, this should be a day of celebration for all Nikon enthusiasts! Hooray! I probably won't be able to resist the temptation, and will likely buy the first D3100 I can find. I have a huge pile of fast, manual-focus Nikkor lenses that I've been hoarding (including a brand new, manual-focus Nikkor 50mm f/1.2), all in preparation for this happy, momentous occasion! I guess I finally got my D90 "firmware" upgrade!
