For those of you looking for information about the Nikon D90 replacement this thread is for you. I will update the Thread title as soon as we have a better idea of the "official" name (D7000, D95, D5100 etc.)

As of today July 21st 2010 here are the rumored specs of the D90 replacement

* 16MP DX sensor
* same noise performance like the D700!
* full HD
* 8 fps
* new video AF and performance
* parts of the body will be aluminum

There are other threads with discussions on this replacement already in progress but I think this thread should be strictly about the specs,price,and availability of the next "D90". I guess this thread is actually meant to replace the too long "Waiting for a D90 Refresh" thread which was just too long at 6 pages!

I have suspicions about the 8 fps as well. Three and a half frames seems to be too large of a jump when most model updates only get a frame or two. Five or six fps seems more like it.

If they applied what they learned about noise and ISO from the D3s, it is very likely 6400 ISO should be quite attainable with D700 results.

The D700 got it's good low light capabilities from spacing the receptors further apart on the sensor to eliminate noise caused from light spilling over from a receptor onto it's neighbors, or 'illumination bleed' if you will.

If the D90 refresh gets good low light capabilities, it'll probably come from that development the Sony cameras are using with putting the circuitry on the back of the camera's sensor providing as much as 2.0 EV improvement because they can't use the D700 trick on a DX sensor while keeping the resolution high - there just isn't enough real estate.

This might be a prime reason why the D700 refresh is being pushed to 2011 as Nikon may want to see how sales are affected if the D90 as good as the rumored specs. If it sells like hotcakes, will there be a profitable market for a D700? let's remember the D700's prime selling point is it's low light capability at affordable cost whereas the only other cameras with the same features cost twice as much. If the D90 sells at it's current price but with the same low light capabilities of the D700, many of the would-be D700 purchasers may opt for the D90 instead.

As mentioned elsewhere the pixels of the new 16mp sensor will be 1/3 the area of the D700 pixels. so if the sensors had identical sensitivity it would have about 1.4 stops lower iso performance. the reviews of the D3s vs D3 says that the difference in ISO performance is about 1.5 stops. so by simply applying the D3S technology to the new 16mp sensor(assuming that the D700 and the D90 had the same level of techs) you would get the D700 level high ISO performance on the new 16mp dx sensor.

re the 8fps .. If you consider that the 7D is one of the targets of this new camera then I think the specs are required if its to compete against the 7D and its successor.

I doubt the D90 replacement will go against the 7D, maybe the upcoming 60D though. Something to go head to head with the 7D would be a D400, without a doubt. Unless the D90 replacement has a 100% viewfinder, 14bit AD converter, mirror lockup (not just mirror delay) weather sealing, and pro style control layout, it will not stand against the 7D.

@PBPM : you have a point there.. but nikon never had head to head models against canon. But I agree it makes space for an above D300 model with these high level features and more, and higher price too ie a mini D3 style DX camera perfect for the serious wildlife photographer. still we dont know if nikon wont put these feature in this merged D90/300 camera.. would be very interesting to see what they do..

The advantage of the D700 is the FX sensor. In my thinking, that sets it apart from all the DX sensor cameras.

Hmm I'm gonna say it'll probably be an entirely new grip. Perhaps the 8fps will only be achievable with a battery grip? So the camera might only be something like 5fps.

I doubt this new camera will steal the D700's thunder though. It's still "just" a DX camera :^) If this camera is as good as we think, that just means the D300 and D700 replacements are going to be even better! Unless of course this camera is replacing both the D90 and D300.

True in terms of class the t2i is a little better than the D5000, the D90 is better than the t2i, the 50D is a little better than the D90, but the D300s is better than the 50D. The 7D addresses the D300s directly so it would definitely go for the D400 unless the D90 replacement is also the D300ses replacement too (which I highly doubt). The 50D is definitely a class under the 7D making it's nikon counterpart the D90. Nikon probably saw the lesser class t2i rivaling the spot of the D90 so they improved it enough to go head to head with the upcoming 60D...

Fwiw amazon is showing 1-2 Month wait on d90 body only. I have been waiting to replace my d40x for about 6 months now and I am hoping to be buying a nice engagement present for my fiancé and I. I almost pulled the trigger on the s5 pro last month but I decided to just wait this thing out. The d40x has been really good to me but I am yearning for an Af screw and a little better viewfinder. A slight bump in dos would be a welcome addition. I have been following this for a while and I am wondering if there has been any history of nikon having issues with early production issues. I was an early adoptee of an iMac 3 years back and the whole lot of the first ones released had glitchy graphics and a ton of backlight bleed. Have there been any infamous nikon recalls or poor quality releases?

There were some quick firmware releases in the past but from the time of the D300/D3 releases It has been good. But the recent announcement by nikon management saying that they are fast tracking their technology may cause some glitches to surface in this round of releases... hope not.

yeah. I forgot... I kinda glaze up and loose interest with any news related to stuff lower than a D90.. :-)

I didnt even notice that 55-300 lens announcement till a thread was started up :-)

Very happy with new, heavily discounted D90 purchase - that discount probably thanks to months of D90 replacement rumors. Thanks, Nikon Rumors!

Replacement sounds very good and will consider adding one when ITS replacement is rumored two years hence. Although a D700 may come my way (thanks to rumors of its impending replacement!) Thanks again, Nikon Rumors!

I think I'd take a look at the D90 replacement, but I think I'd rather hold out for the D400, or D700 replacement.

I'll be getting one but not immediately. I'm happy enough with my D90 and I'll wait until I read some reviews on the feature I want most (the high ISO performance) come-in.

I will definitely be getting one, unless it does in fact make a price jump from where the d90 was (if it perhaps does in fact replace the d300 as well...) Then I simply won't be able to swing it budget-wise.

D90R plus a variety of lenses is, to me and my budget, greater than a D700 and 1 lens.

Most probably a new grip. Probably old battery, or updated one, like the D3000 or D60 with the D40's battery.

You know, I do think the D90 replacement will be quite awesome. I mean, as nice as the D700 replacement would be for obvious reasons, it's not relatively attainable. The D90 and its replacement most certainly is.

D40 FTW!

Lenses like crazy for me, I'm going to use my D40 until it plumb wears out and turns into a nice paperweight. Then I'll buy the D90 replacement replacement! :D

If the specs are as rumored and it's ~1000 body only, I will probably be upgrading from my D60 with this.

LOL ! NikoDoby! I just noticed you closed the Waiting for the D90 refresh thread.. Technically we are still waiting for a D90 refresh.. :-) and although its fairly certain that there will be a new D90 level camera it is still not 100% Unless you have seen one and cant tell us ! :-)
