I think we are "Waiting for the replacement's refresh."
where there’s smoke there’s forum fire
Hi ALL,
I've been reading hundreds of posts on D90,done some comparison with Canon's 550D,but it seems that i am going for the D90.
Have decided to purchase D90 kit @ USD$1060 here in Singapore where i reside, next week but after stumbling upon this great site and this thread, don't know if i should wait for the refresh release of just rock on the D90?
Pardon my knowledge,i'm a newbie! :)
Cheers!!

Rudy, Congratulations on choosing Nikon over Canon !! LOL I think that gets some cool points especially on this site !! Hah!
Look, we dont know for sure when that D90 replacement is going to show up, though it looks like there will be an announcement within a month or so. If you can wait 1-2 months then wait. if you have some event you want to take photos of .. maybe rent one or buy it. You can take lots of photos in a couple of months and its not going to stop working after the new camera is announced. And the price for a D90 now is good value, the new one will cost 20-40% more when its first released. Will it be 20-40% more value to you? Only you can decide that.
Hi heartyfisher,
THANKS for tips.I have been hanging on deciding to purchase Canon's 550D & D90..been doing my reseach and asking around some friends too until i stumbled upon this site and got to know abt the upcoming changes.I've saved enuff for the current D90 if Nikon going to introduce the new D90 next week,i would be happy but i think i will not wait any further, just grab the current D90 and maybe can purchase the current one agn when i saved enuf. Further more it will surely cost around 3-400 more..i will just wait for the price to calm down abit and enjoy my D90.
In the meantime,i will watch this space everyday for good news.
:)
You are Welcome and oh yes .. WELCOME!

So if the rumoured specifications is a D90 replacement.. Hands up.. who is getting one.. ? and who is not getting one. And finally .. who is still undecided.
This would actually be my first DSLR, rather belatedly (my previous cameras have all been P&S). Spent ages researching and narrowed it down to the D90... just in time for the speculation on its replacement to start. Just my luck. :)
I don't mind springing for the extra money on the upgrade, but if I'm going to do that, I think there are probably three things that'd be deal-breakers for me:
--Will it still have an AF motor? I'd read -- I don't know if it was here or elsewhere -- that they're moving away from AF motors on anything DX.
--An articulating screen, like the one found on the 5000, would be lovely, especially for shooting at odd angles.
--Similar controls to the 90 (ie. the separate LCD and dials)
--The rumored boost in ISO sensitivity
I could do without the articulating screen, but having used one (took a slew of photos recently using a friend's 5000) I'd much rather have it than not. The AF motor would be very useful in the event that I decide to go with older (and, I'm assuming, less expensive) lenses where appropriate. The control setup... maybe I'm nitpicky, but I rather like the 90's setup. And the ISO performance -- especially with lower noise -- can't possibly be a bad thing!
Welcome, aslightdelay. I'd guess that it would still have an AF motor, but who knows?
To hearty's question about the D90 replacement: I may get one, so I guess that makes me undecided. I suppose I don't like making decisions based on rumors.
If the D90 replacement lines up with the rumor admin posted today (D95) I'd be very tempted to get one.
Pretty much what Ive been saying for a long time. Nikon will merge the D90 and D300 into a single camera. So this "D95" essentially becomes Nikon's new DX flagship and will be "equal" to the metal bodied canon 50D/60D. The $1200 body only price sounds just right. So expect the kit to be around 1499.
This also means there will definitely be a full frame FX D_00 for under $2000!
If the specs are true that will be a killer camera for that kind of price. wow

So do you think there will be a D3 series DX flagship?
That would be quite surprising. The new frame rate, if it were to be 6 fps, wouldn't equal the old D300.
But hey, if the rumors are right, then there's a magnesium body too. I wanted one with a metal body.
I still think we'll see a D400, to go head to head with the 7D. Killing that class of DX body would be a bad move, unless of course there is a low cost FX body coming soon, which I doubt.
Though this may mean that they could justify making the D400 more expensive, so restore the gap between it and the D95, and in line with the 7D.
Though the question is what would a $1600-$1800 D400 gain over a $1500 one?
Hard to say, maybe there wont be a price shift at all? Looking at the DX lineup, Nikon would be going head to head with Canon on all levels.
D3000/*D3100? - Xs/Xsi
*D3100?/D5000 - Ti/T2i
D95 - 50D/60D
D300s/D400 - 7D/7D MkII
* It will be interesting to see where the rumored D3100 will fall in the lineup.
As for the D400, there are some places it could go, I mean it might still have better weather sealing, maybe it will be a pro style body with built in grip? It would still have 100% viewfinder, (D95 will likely have 96% like the D90), mirror lockup, and keep the pro style of controls, which I suspect the D95 might lack, since it would still be a more consumer oriented camera. It could have a faster frame rate, maybe 8/9FPS?

Possibly, but I don't think that's a good idea. What is the major difference between a 50D and a 7D anyway?
I still can't see the reason for the 7D. I don't understand Canon to begin with though.

See above for my opinion on this.
I liked that there was a clear difference between a D300 and a D90 style body. There isn't enough room in between in my opinion to add an extra model, that only adds confusion and clutter.
When you say pro-style with a grip, that would be sort of my idea- a D2x successor.
What's not to get about the EOS 7D? It is a much higher end body than the 50D, just as the D300s is higher end than the D90. The 7D has better build quality and weather sealing, not to mention pro grade AF system. The mid range cameras like the 30D, 40D, 50D have had the the same AF system as the XTi, Xsi, T1i and T2i, yikes!
As for a true D2Xs successor, (D3 was new breed, not a replacement) yes please! When I say that, I mean that could be the D400! There is easily room for a semi-pro/pro DX body, even with a D95 as rumored. For one thing, yes the D95 may have a mag alloy body, but does it have dust and weather seals? Does it have Pro style control layout? PC sync ports etc? If not there will be room for a D400. Now what the D400 looks like, who knows. It could even be an entry level FX body for all we know!
sorry to take the thread in a different direction but I plan on purchasing a D90 camera body at the end of August. A new d90 body is still costing over $800 at B&H and adorama which I think is still too high. Since the replacement is predicted to come out in a few weeks does anyone predict that the d90 body will drop even further in price by the end of August? Any advice on purchasing the d90 body would be greatly appreciated.
I doubt you'll see much more of a drop, not until there are only a few left. The D80 price didn't drop very much until 2 months after the D90 came out.

As a newer Nikon user, I have no context for the D2xs. Anyone mind telling me what diferentiates it from a D300/D700 body and a D3/D3x style one? Seems exactly like a D3 to me.
Physically the bodies didn't change much, but moving from a crop sensor to an full frame sensor was a big move. It left the DX market with no pro grade body, thus it was a new ball game, so to speak.

I'm sure there is a market for a pro DX DSLR, the birders would sure like an updated D2x with the D90's ISO sensitivity at the very least. And I guess some people would also want the higher pixel density of a DX sensor too.

The D2xs I think was an updated version of the D2x. The D2xs was still DX and the D3 series is FX.
Yup, us birder would love it! I'd rather said camera to have the rumored 16mp sensor with better high ISO than the D90 though. ;-)
Your right about the D2Xs, it was a minor update, which I believe had a larger buffer. I think the original D2X could get a buffer upgrade, making them the same.
Unless the ISO at 3200 is very close to the D700, then I am unlikely to jump for only 4 more (or less) MP. I don't shoot video and if I did it would be only to grab something at a party and 720 is good enough for me for that.
I will likely pass and just buy glass.
