nioce!!!!
continuous AF introduced at a consumer level, WOAH!
This will give the T2i something to think about. . .

Yes that new autofocus in video is definitely going to be a game changer if it's as fast as is hoped. "Photography redefined"...hey I bet they'll work that tagline into their advertisements
Posted 2 years ago # -
I really don't mind about the continuous AF in video but having 1080p on such entry level is very, very good news.
Posted 2 years ago # -
this sounds like a great entry level cam.
has nikon in the past replaced 2 bodies in a short time frame (assuming the d90 gets replaced soon too)?
Posted 2 years ago # -
Yes the D3 and D300 were announced together.

yeah, that's pretty remarkable. the 1080 really isn't that important, but to keep up with the times it needs to be there, but most d3100 users will probably opt to shoot in 720 (assuming the shutter speed options are more varied, which they probably will be)

I wonder where this 10mp CMOS sensor is coming from? Sony doesn't have a 10mp APS-C CMOS?
Oh my goodness it's made by canon! ;^P
Posted 2 years ago # -
i wonder if they just distilled the 12mp CMOS into the new 10mp CMOS since the 10mp CCD wouldn't cut it for video?
What's ALSO interesting is the nomenclature. . .
the D3100 should yield a D5100 down the pike. . .which also means the D8000 (D90 replacement) will be superseded by the D8100, etc. . .
LOTS of separation it seems from the D300s/D700 line
And of course this almost ENTIRELY confirms the D700s/x whatever will get 1080p followed by possibly something zanier in the D4. . .
1080p and AF video. . .such simple things yet so coveted. . .

You know, that AF patent on the main blog doesn't look like it's about an SLR. It's got a beamsplitter in front of the sensor so that you can get continuous phase-detected AF. Tell me that's not exciting. It's probably actually for their EVIL-type camera.
Posted 2 years ago # -
If you don't believe me, just look at the image Figure 19 (the SLR one). The light doesn't go through the final mirror on that one, but it does on the others. All the others have EVFs.
Posted 2 years ago # -
What's interesting about all those Nikon patents for a new type of AF is they specify it's applicable to all types of cameras, both SLR with a separate AF sensor and EVIL.

D3100? Sounds like nikon is taking a few pointers from sony. Whatever happened to the D3000s or D3000h or D3000x or something?
Posted 2 years ago # -
IMHO, the most important feature is the implementation of CMOS sensor in the cheapest Nikon. I would say, that the ISO performance from this sensor will beat d90/d300s performance.

I hope not. if it is as expected.. then it should rival the D700 for high iso performance.

Rival the D700 in ISO performance? The current D90 doesn't even do that and it's 12mp. Remember it's still a APS-C sized sensor not full frame like the D700. Actually there is suspicion now that the "D3100" might be the same NEX 14mp sensor and we know that, although it's a good sensor, it doesn't come close to matching the D700.

I always said that Nikon was going to have to add new numbers to their cameras. I was really hoping the D300 replacement would have been called the D301. I hate HATE the "S" added to the end of "tweaked" models. Remember there were film cameras named F301, F401, F501, F601 etc.
I like how the name D7100 sounds for the D90 replacement :^)Posted 2 years ago # -
Niko, I've been thinking, based on this news, that Nikon may in fact "upgrade" all of their "consumer" models with 1080p24 enabled, yet still "keep their word" about "no new pro bodies for 2010," and instead, wait until Q1 2011 (or later) for the full-frame body "upgrades." Otherwise, any lower-tier, "upgraded," full-frame bodies may potentially cannibalize any remaining, top-tier Nikon full-frame bodies while they're still on retail shelves. Whaddya think?

Wait let me see if I understand your question. Will low-end cameras hurt high-end camera sales because of the better specs? I don't think so. The D3100 isn't going to have the AF and build quality of the D300S. Metering and dual card slots are still going to be better for "pros" etc. The "D7000" is still probably going to be a plastic unsealed body without CF card slots etc. So those features will still be important to some photographers.
Whatever sensor turns up on the D90 replacement is all but guaranteed on the D300S replacement. So if the "D7000" gets a new 16mp sensor then the "D400" will get an improved version of that sensor in about a years time or less. The D100, D200, D300 have all shared the "same" sensor with the D70, D80, D90 but it was the DX00 series that came out first.
So this time if the "D7000" comes out with more megapixels, more AF points, and better HD video, as is expected, then Nikon might actually expect it to take some sales away from the D300S. That would explain why the D300S was so heavily discounted recently along with the D90 and D700.
Another possibility to explain why the "D7000" is coming out before the "D400" is that the D7000 will become Nikon's high-end DX camera and move the D400 up to a full frame! :^) So maybe the D400/500 will be the next full frame camera but it won't really be a direct replacement for the D700. So all of those Nikon "Reps" aren't lying when they say there won't be a D700 replacement this year.

I don't think so.What I meant was, more specifically, I don't expect to see a D700 replacement with 1080p24 capability, at any time before we see a D3s upgrade, with 1080p24. That Nikon may "restrict" its 1080p24 "upgrades" to its consumer, DX-models only, while maintaining the differentiation you mention with its existing line-up of FX-bodies, for a couple more quarters.

Same thing though. The "D800" won't have 100% viewfinder, vertical grip, better metering, weather sealing etc. and to many that's more important than 1080 vid. If the "D800" has 16 or 18 megapixels then the ISO range/image quality won't be the same. It'll be good but it won't see in the dark like the D3S can.
Nikon sold the 4mp D2H/S along side the 6mp D100, 10mp D200, and 12mp D2X for a long time too. Different cameras for different jobs.

If a D800 really does come out before Q2 2011, I'll be shooting films with it by Xmas (and likely won't even consider the Sony VG10, even though it'll have the more accommodating form factor). A native F-mount, FX-frame, 1080p24 camera, for under $3,000, would be a dream come true. Although, I'll still be Jonesing for a D3s someday, too (for stills)!
Nevertheless, I'm giddy that Nikon employed a modern H.264 CODEC into their new V-DSLR! DX or not, improving the CODEC was one of the most important things Nikon's achieved with this entry!

Sounds like good specs, Nikon needed something like this to answer the T2i. Besides, if they keep the price the same, they should be successful.

Based on the specs, I wouldn't be surprised if this D3100 stands side by side with the D3000, for a while anyway, in the same way the D40 stood as the basic model along side the D40x and later D60.

It blows it out of the water completely. And I would imagine it might have a new autofocus system as well.
Actually, come to think of it, it might replace the D5000.
