Yeah the D300 only had 2 more megapixels than the D200 but there was also the dramatic change of going from a 10mp CCD to the 12mp CMOS. So I wouldn't say it's the same thing.

Unless Nikon can make the 14mp Sony sensor as good in the dark as the D3 then a 2mp increase ain't gonna do it against 18 and 20 plus megapixel competitors that are cheaper in price.

Remember that the D2H had an "awesome" LBCAST sensor too but at only 4mp it didn't stand a chance against other cameras with 8 and 10mp.

so we're really thinking 18 or 20 on the D4?

Almost forces the D4x to be at the 30mpx, that's like medium format territory. . . .

I don't know, I think 12mpx clean shots are good enough for most applications, most wedding albums can barely swallow a nice 16x24! I guess for commercial prints it may be a solid sell. . .

I'm just glad to see the continuous AF/1080p in the d3100, speaks to what we'll get in the future:

    2010 or 2011: D700(s?) with dual cards, 1080p, and 12mpx / maybe a D3xs??
    2011: D4 with 1080p and continuous AF, 18mpx (?) / D400 with 1080p continuous AF and 18mpx?
    2012: D4x?

I doubt Nikon would go directly to 18mpx. Nikon has usually never shared the same MPx
    on their flagships with Canon

    D1x 3mp, Eos 1D 4mpx

    D2h 4mp, Eos 1D mII 8mpx

    D2x 12mp, Eos 1Ds mII 11mpx

    D3 12mp, Eos 1D mIII 10mpx

    D3 24mp, Eos 1Ds mIII 21mpx

    etc...

I think the D300s is als close if not also a clearence item. With the economy the way it is Nikon wil have to give significant improvements at a reasonable price. I would no be surprised to se the replace ment for he D300s with more mp then the replacement for the D90. I am thinking about 15 or the D90 replacement and 18 for the D300s replacement. If the D90 replacement is released and has specs then the D300s it will essentially cut off the D300s so what we may see is one camera replacing tboth the 90 and 300s with the less expensive models gaining moderatly in specs over the next year or so. I am hoping for a "professional" model that replaces both the 90 and 300s

    D1x was 5MP, so you're a little off there. The D1/H) was 2MP though.

Wow grab one of these if you can at a very good price! Great camera even if the refresh is significant.

I saw one being listed on craigslist for something like $450.

Be VERY suspicious of low priced items on craiglist. Lot's of stolen items on there for a quick sale.

Indeed. That's why one has to go by "if it's too low it's a scam/or stolen" rule. even if you buy unknowingly a stolen item, the original owner can retrieve it if he can prove that it's his with no compensation to you. So be wary of this.

Ya man. I think in some places you can be arrested too. So just because you bought a D700 with a 17-35 lens for $1000 doesn't mean it's an "awesome deal" and you can then say, "I didn't know it was stolen" as a defense.

Indeed. I don't know about being prosecuted but certainly the gear could be taken away.

It also depends on a person some don't have a moral problem with buying stolen gear.

It's like that story of a guy who bought a truck for a few hundred dollars and spend thousands customizing it. Somehow the cops or insurance co. realized the registration numbers didn't match and that it was stolen. So the original owner got his truck back but with a new powerful motor, paint, interior, etc. for free!

So be careful buying cheap D90's on ebay and especially on craigslist.

Based on the D80 to D90 refresh, is anyone willing to speculate on the opening price and availability for the D90 replacement? (Yeah, I know it's all a guessing game...)

Price on D90 refresh? Most likely same as D90 pricing or little more expensive when first announced. Also hoping this year there be new 35mm AF-S that is for FX cameras.

The reason I ask is that the company whose name is synonymous with the river and rain forest dropped the D90 body price by a buck and a half yesterday, making the body *very* attractive. If the new camera will be out next month vs. late fall, then it makes sense to wait. If the availability is closer to Christmas, I can shoot a lot of photos with a D90 between now and then. I know that we're all just guessing, but my D80 just died and it feels strange to leave the house without a camera.

$750 is a good deal on the D90. I guess no one can know when the replacement will be available (or if a replacement will be announced, even). Oddly, I saw the price of the D90 was about $830 at amazon just a week or so ago after sitting at about 780-800 for months. Did anyone else see that? Maybe it was just a mistake.

PS I just leave a whole slew of camera gear in my cart (save for later) so that whenever I buy something I can just scroll down and check prices. Just so you know I'm not obsessively checking the prices every day... ;-)

Don't hesitate to buy a D90 - you can't lose more than $150 or so if you sell it when the replacement comes out (with inflated price anyway till after X-mas . I don't expect the body only replacement to sell less than $ 1100-1150 in first few months )

I bought my D80 + 18-135mm new for $850 when there was the talk of a replacement ( D90 ) , used it for 2 years and after 42000 shots, I sold the body only for $450.( it would have made $620 or so with the 18-135mm ). Total loss at the end of 2 yrs/42000 shots only around $200 ( on a 2006 model DSLR ). And I could have replaced with a fairly new secondhand D90 body by just adding $150-200 on top.
