So Nikon's new prez says they will showcase a new concept camera this year. Obviously the best time to do that would be at the Photokina2010 trade show in September. I also think that it's a pretty safe bet to say that it will be Nikon's first EVIL(mirrorless) camera.

Remember that Sony did the same thing with it's EVIL concept camera in Feb. at PMA. The production versions of the NEX cameras really weren't any different. It took about 4months for Sony to put their "concept" cameras in stores. I'm thinking Nikon will put their "concept" camera in stores around December.

But what if the concept camera turns out to be the mysterious MX camera and it actually does turnout to be a new Nikon medium format system?!? I doubt that though since Nikon would make a butt load more money with an EVIL cam geared towards "amateurs" rather than an expensive medium format cam for "pros".

The NEX will be a tough act to follow. I feel like I can say that now and know what I'm talking about.

I read about this on Engadget. I was surprised I did not read this here!

I THINK SOMEONE IS SLACKING! Not naming any names though. *shifty eyes*

But meh. A friend of mine has been talking my ear off about the NEX and has made me tempted to get one. I know there is an adapter to mount Nikkors on 'em too.

I would be very much interested if Nikon combined some of the features of the P100/P6000 and a really awesome sensor! That would rock and I'd buy one.

I mean I love both my cameras but sometimes, I really do miss having a small point and shoot.

??? This was mentioned on the main blog and I mentioned it here in the forum so...?

Anyway yeah the NEX cameras are exciting but there are a lot of exciting cameras coming soon...

I find it interesting that Nikon's new Prez is dropping so many hints about "mirrorless" cameras. But I think they might also have a fixed lens larger sensor camera in the works like the Leica X1 and the rumored Panasonic LX5. Remember too that Nikon confirmed the existence of a G11 "competitor" that was suppose to have been unveiled at PMA (I think it was) but got delayed for some reason.

I decided to pass on the NEX. I decided to spend some of my EVIL camera fund money to pay off some gambling debts and buy some film cameras instead!

I was thinking about getting an EVIL camera as well, but I got a cheap used D40x. When Nikon makes an EVIL camera I'm sure it will be nice, but if I wanted a small camera I'd want it to be pocketable point and shoot small.

How exactly is a D40X pocketable and small? And why a D40X? The D40 is a much better camera.

Niko, read the post again, I think you missed what I was saying. I never said the D40X was pocketable.

Quoting myself, "...but if I wanted a small camera I'd want it to be pocketable point and shoot small." In other words, not an EVIL camera, the lenses make them too big to be pocketable without a pancake lens, meaning useless for what I shoot. As for the D40X, I don't need 1/500s flash sync, and I didn't want a 6MP camera. As for the D40 being better, that is a matter of opinion, and what you use it for. Tests show that the D40X has better dynamic range, making it a much better camera for landscapes.

Uh yeah I can read English and other languages just fine thank you. The NEX and Olympus EVIL cameras are still pretty small even with "kit" lenses attached. Especially the Olympus with it's collapsible lens.

The D40X has the "same" sensor as the D3000 so why not just get a refurbished/new D3000 with newer features? If the D40X is so great then the D3000 should be even better.

Seriously why do you even care what I spend my money on? I can make my own choices thanks. :-) Anyway, it was cheap, and refurb Nikon's are not sold in Canada. I wont pay duty on imports from the states.

I don't care what you spend your money on. The D40X isn't the first camera people tend to reach for on the store shelf that's all. You brought up your D40X purchase, not me.

Oh Niko... I'm not sure if I should love you or hate you. lol. I did mention that i bought, you had to drag it out and make a big deal about it (why get that crappy camera, the D40 is better, the D3000 is "way better" etc.).

Lets get back to the Nikon EVIL camera, shall we?

I was just curious to know why you picked the D40X instead since YOU said you wanted an EVIL camera. In other words you chose to buy a D40X over waiting for an EVIL camera. I didn't think you'd get all offended by it. Sorry for asking!

I'm not offended. Sometimes I think I shouldn't post when it is after 1AM PST. I tend to leave logical thinking at the door.

Lets see if I can put something together though? Okay, I was thinking of getting an evil camera, but decided that it wasn't practical for my photography, thus I bought the D40X as a backup, for when I have my D300 in for a tuneup.

You bought a D40X as backup to a D300?!? What's wrong with you...

Haha, yeah, strange right? Would have liked a D200, but they still sell for like $600 or more up here.

I recommend you buy a used D90 with a 35mm f1.8 lens next time. You can use it as backup for your canon T2i :^)

If this EVIL camera does make an appearance at Photokina I think people will be surprised at how small it will be. Admin may post a new patent for what would likely be a kit zoom for it. The lens would be about 2 inches by 2 inches. The NEX can't have normal lenses that small.

Well with a lens crop of almost 3X(!) I'd expect Nikon's EVIL to be small. But it's hard to imagine that it can be smaller than the NEX cameras, aside from the lenses that is. I don't think I'd want a smaller camera (body) then the NEX. And I really don't like having to buy completely new lenses for it. So my camera bag will have FX,DX, and then small EVIL glass?

And remember that with tiny lenses comes a small sensor. If the sensor is smaller than M4/3rd then I'd lose interest real quick. The only thing that might hold my interest is if the Nikon EVIL has a very retro look/feel that is also rumored.

Not to mention that making the crop factor too small would also lead to inferior image quality in all but the most ideal conditions. I think image quality would have to at the very least match the current 4/3s sensor EVIL cameras or the Nikon camera will fail measurably.

not to beat a dead horse (or I guess more aptly, bring a dead horse back to life...), but why is the d40 "better" than the d40x?

The D40 does have some advantages, such as slightly lower noise at ISO1600, a 1/500s flash sync (rather than 1/200s). Otherwise they are identical. The D40X's advantage is, as noted that it has better dynamic range. Lets not get off topic again though!

I think one should view his as a whole new format. Once upon a time pros used large and medium format. When 35 mm became popular photographers didn't complain about incompatibility to the MF lenses. It's a different tool, if it has a use then people will by it. I do think a format like this would be aimed a similar market to those in the 80's that wanted something better than an Instamatic.

Of this could turn into another Pentax 110 failure. Nice on paper, but who would want one:
