Rival Specs For the D90 Replacement?

These are the supposed specs of the canon "60D" which is supposedly replacing the 50D. However I think these specs are waaay too similar to the 7D so if canon prices this camera at the same range as the 50D then where does that leave the 7D?
So for the price of a D90 canon "might" offer a smaller metal body camera with the following specs:

- 18mp
- ISO 6400 Max
- 9AF Points
- Articulating LCD
- New Menu System
- Movie mode like the 7D

So if this camera comes out next month then expect the D90 replacement to not only match these specs but hopefully surpass them too.

So here's hoping that means more AF points (35?), 16 or 18mp, Swivel LCD, and better video then the D90/D300S.

Sounds about right for the 60D to me, other than the articulating screen, not much else they can do. If anything those specs are too close to the T2i/550D.

My Nikon D90 replacement personal wish list:

1. 1080p24 video.
2. Modern CODEC.
3. Manual ISO control in D-Movie Mode.
4. Manual shutter speed control in D-Movie Mode.
5. More focus points.

Other than those five things, I'm pretty happy with the D90 as it is. I'm really hoping you're right, and that the introduction of the above-spec'd "60D" lights a fire under the Nikon development team while they finalize feature sets and specifications for the D90's replacement.

Ideal Nikon D90 replacement to me:

1. Full 1080p video with manual controls for everything
2. Same body design and plastic construction, but with dust and moisture seals
3. 14MP Sensor with improved high ISO performance, at least as good as Canon's 18MP sensor.
4. Improved AF system with 6 cross type AF points spread around, (not just in the center like the D300, please!) and 10 other AF points.

Amen!

But, I purposely wanted to keep my expectations low (hoping, instead, to be surprised!). Those are the bare-minimum features I'd like "fixed." I certainly would welcome your list of treats as well, but I know they'll be careful to segregate their product line so as not to cannabalize sales of higher-end models.

Yeah, that is why I said it would be the ideal D90 replacement. I think it is more likely that we'll see something more like.

1. 14MP sensor, with current ISO range and quality
2. Same Body design, no real changes
3. Same AF system
4. 720p video with manual controls over shutter speed.

Every Nikon DSLR body whether is entry, semi and professional level in video mode should have the flowing:

1. 1080p: 24, 25, 30, why not 50fps as well.
2. 720p: 24. 25, 30, 60, if possible 120fps bursts at 2 min clip.
3. Full manual control in video mode with live histogram, audio levels.
4. 18MP or higher, anything less then that is waist of advertising
5. Swivel screen and HDMI output without cutting out the camera screen.
7. Different codex, MOV and AVI possibly a 422 compression if NIkon wants to gain the
lead
8. Dual SD slot
9. Silent object detect AF system with some vr zoom lenses.
10. and many more which I cant think at the moment.

What would be nice and I am hopping that NIkon is doing that when they bring out the D700 replacement to be able to have the crop factor in video mode as well obviously with all the requests that I mention above.

18MP sensor? From whom? Unless they make one in house or get it from Canon that just isn't going to happen. Dual SD card slots in an entry level camera? Full video control in an entry level model? Seriously? Maybe in five years from now...

What would the point of a "new" D90 be then? They might as well just call it a D90X and disappoint everyone including me!

Sony has a bunch of new sensors coming. The newest being a 14mp however I don't think 14mp is enough when others will be bringing out 20 plus megapixels at the same price range. The only way 14mp is going to be "enough" is if Nikon works the hell out of that Sony sensor and makes a Prince of Darkness "D7000" to go along with the Lord of Darkness D3S.

Yeah those specs don't make sense to me either but that line-up would have the 550D, "60D", and the 7D competing against the D5000, D90/"D7000", and the D300S.

Well they have to make it them self PBPM. Why wait till now? This was going to happen sooner or later. To me, the whole situation about sensors is a bit strange.

Nikon is not a small company that started into photography business few years back and they got caught off guard by this sensor issue. They have been on the business for a long time so they should of made it their own sensors by now. Nikon should of been the once to lend sensors to other manufactures and the other way around it.

Now Nikon has to wait for Sony to bring out a sensor so they can pick it up and retouch it a bit for a new body.

NIkon is the Mercedes of cars today so imagine if Mercedes borrowed engine from Audi because they can't come up with a descend engine to compete with the market?

IT is a bit shameful for Nikon isn't it?

Nikon makes the machines that build sensors. They could build their own sensors but Nikon is still a "small" company compared to everyone else. Canon and Sony are much larger then Nikon in several different ways. They have the money to build factories dedicated to doing nothing more then churning out sensors. Nikon doesn't have that ability. For them it's more cost effective to design the sensor and then outsource it to someone else to build for them. While at the same time selling them the machines to build the sensors.

And actually car companies do share engines and several different parts. A company builds safety belts and sells them to both Audi, Mercedes, Toyota, etc. Another example would be parts from a Lamborghini's are the same as on an Audi and Volkswagen

But still I don't understand one think Niko! According to you're pint if Nikon designs their own sensors why they don't get sensor which is a mid range from 12 - 24mpx that is on D3X? Like 14, 16 ore 18mpx for example.

Not that I am a MPX fanatic because a 12mpx on my D300s is more than I need for what I do it is just that if today's market is asking for more MPX because they think that it will improve their photo-graphical skills or what ever reasons are there why Nikon is not working faster on that matter. At the end of the day more MPX are selling now these days.

Sensor is the hart of the camera so Nikon should be the first one to come up with new ides despite that they are a small company. Competition doesn't ask if you are small or big if you are not with in the trend of what costumers are asking then you are out of business.

I just hate to see Nikon have the same fate as Minolta and Pentax. Well for that matter a lot of photographers her i my country say that Nikon and Canon are owned by the same person or group of people, which is not that far fetched because large companies buy smaller once but still produce both names.

in reality, it'll just be a subtle jump like the D80 was to the D90
10mp->12 mpx->redone 12mpx for 2010 release->new D400 sensor for 2012 release

video will remain 720p
single SD card

changes will probably be like the D3s, cleaner higher ISO's, possibly a bump in fps (probably not), and more than likely some "cooler" video editing options. Not seeing this as a biggie - which is why I bought the D90 cheap now.

The NEXT one with the D400 sensor will be sick.

Niko, sometimes you make me laugh! The D90 was a D80 with a higher res senor and video. What do you expect the replacement to be? Let's be serious here and not live in dreamland. Like the D80 and D90 before it, the replacement will have a higher res sensor and improved video, and a tweaked AF system maybe. I think many of you are going to be very disappointed, because you want the D90 replacement to fit your needs. Then reality will hit, and you realize Nikon wont be coming out with a 18MP sensor. 16MP tops is possible with 14MP being most likely. 1080p video, sure, manual controls, maybe! Thom Hogan agrees with me on the last two points about the sensor and video, based on what he has heard from insiders.

As for the other users point about making them sell. No offense, but not everyone in the world is obsessed with MP. In the amateur and advanced amateur range that may be true, but most buyers of DSLRs don't have a clue. If they were the D3000, D5000 and D90 wouldn't be selling now. They are though, I saw just as many Nikon cameras at the high school graduations (I work at a location all the local schools use), as Canon's. Most of those Nikon's were D5000, while most of the Canon Rebels were still XSi. Leap two years, and that mix will be mostly D5000 replacements and T2i's.

PB PM, you always make me laugh, ha ha. Yes by your logic I do realize the the D90 is just a D70 with a better sensor and the D300 is just a D100 with a better sensor too. Or you can also say the D5000 is just a D40 with a better sensor and video. The "next D90" will improve on the video and AF. I don't need TH to tell me that. By the way TH said his "sources" told him a new Nikon was coming in February too.

The next D90 can't afford to be a D90 with a 14mp sensor and manual control 720p video and that's it. Not when other cameras in it's price range are going to have 18plus megapixels and metal bodies with high resolution swivel screens. Yes, megapixels count doesn't make a good camera but like it or not that's what consumers (not photographers) look at besides price. If canon can give them a metal body with more features and more megapixels then why would they even consider a D90 with just a 14mp sensor?

I'm not against a 14mp sensor. I'm against a "D70" with a 14mp sensor replacing the D90. Nikon has to step up the game and they know that. Yes the internals will be very similar to the D90 but I have faith that Nikon will deliver a worthy opponent to whatever canon introduces next month.

Nikon should increase its MP's. They (Nikon) are starting to act like The American Car Makers of the last 50 years (It dont matter if we make it they will buy it). Well you see where that got The Kings of Detroit.. I think this is what Nikon should do and this is just my opinion(and every one has one etc..).

D3000 D3000 Entry level stay the same.
D5000 D5000x 14MP, Better Sensor, Chasis, Better AF, Ability
to use all of Nikons lens, 1080P Cam.
D90 D90x 15MP, Better sensor, Chassis, Swivel LCD, Better
AF manual Controls in 1080P Cam.
D300,D300s D300x 16MP, Better sensor, No Cam. 12FPS.
D700 D700X 20MP, Better Sensor, Swevel LCD, No Cam. 15FPS.
D3s D3s1 21MP, Better Sensor, Swevel LCD, 1080p Cam. 22FPS.
D3x D3x 26MP, Better Sensor, No Cam. 26FPS.

I dont think they should discontinue the old models of my new cameras' just lower the price. Also hold down the price on my newly suggessted models. If they would make the new Models that I have suggessted they in the end put some of the other camera makers out of bussiness.

But what happens if that 14 megapixel sensor happens to rival the D3s in dynamic range? Maybe not better it, but rival it? Wouldn't that send people looking at a Canon scrambling for the Nikon? I certainly would.

Of course I'm just speculating, like we all are.

It would set a good example for what else to expect from Nikon. Besides, that would mean we would also expect great things from the D300s, D3s, and D700 replacements. It would also make sense in terms of pricing. Not everyone is going to afford a D300 level camera, but I'm sure enthusiasts would love a D90 replacement.

NSXType, even if Nikon makes that 14mpx sensor to be the all king of sensors with low light and all other goodies it's not going t solve the problem of MPX war. Remember the competition is at 18mpx in entry level DSLRS and not to mention the higher DSLRS that are over 20mpx mark. They are working on the next generation DSLR which will be way over 20 if possible over 30mpx.
SO for Nikon to stay on the game they have to do what the competition is doing but a step forward even if it takes them to sell one kidney. People already made the change from Nikon to Canon with video option and now if Nikon doesn't concur the mpx war it will lose those other loyal costumers that stayed with Nikon for so many years.

A lot of my fellow filmmakers/photographers are in the second generation of Canon DSLRs since they left Nikon. Even the armatures that they've herd about Canon they ask which is better 7D or 5D?

NIkon is out of their wish list any more. You see, Nikon needs to get in top gear not a gear forward in order to sell more bodies to make more money so they can develop the Nikon brand further.

That is an issue valonqe, the question is does Nikon get it? Really does Nikon get the fact that consumers don't care about ISO noise, and that they just compared MP? Then again, I've talked to people in places like Best Buy, and had them asked me if the amount of MP even mattered at all! Seriously, most consumers don't even know!

Anyway, back to the question of does Nikon get it? I'm not sure, sometimes I wonder if they still think it is the 1980's when they dominated the SLR market! Nikon has a lot of things right with the DSLR lineup, ergonomics, control layouts, menus etc, but they always seem a little behind on specs, even though they were the first of the major players to put out a DSLR. It seems as though the D1 was the only thing that Nikon did first, and even that came after Kodak. Nikon needs to innovate, not try and keep up and match specs, it is far to late for that, IMO.

For that to find out we have to wait and see what Photokina brings out.
And if nothing happens I think with in few years time we are going to discuss
Nikons merger with any other bigger boys.

While the MP war is almost certainly not over, I think the G10 to G11 14MP to 10MP transition is an encouraging sign that it might be slowing down.
