I realize that this topic has been covered countless times on this and other forums. I have asked my question on other places as well.. So lets start off just stating a few things.
I currently shoot a Nikon N80, for it I have a 28-80 f3.5-5.6G and a 70-300 f4-5.6.
I have read reviews that the 28-80 is pretty good(for an entry level lens) and that the 70-300 is pretty poor for any type of lens, however, the pictures I have taken with it seem OK and I just like the idea of having a telephoto lens even if it isn't great
I have approximately $750 to spend on a camera(and that is stretching it) and don't think I'll have much more in the near future to buy expensive lenses. The D5000 kit is around 650 and the d90 body only is about 780-800.
I mostly shoot outdoors, and I can probably count on one hand how many times I have needed to use the built in flash on my current SLR.
Most of my shooting is of stationary objects (buildings, landscapes, structures, etc.) but I have shot wildlife before, and use my SLR, even currently, as my main camera(as a point and shoot)
I do tend to have problems with light as I believe the best shots are made at dawn or dusk especially, but as they are outdoors, I do not know how much use a flash would be.
The only other lenses I plan on getting would be a prime like the 35mm f1.8
Basically my questions are:
1. Is the autofocus motor in the d90 worth it basically for the 70-300? because if I got the 5000, the kit lens would cover me where my 28-80 would on the d90
2. Is 28mm wide enough for an all-around lens? I am leaning towards no. And if it is not, it would be more like a $300 difference between the d5000 and the d90 to get the necessary lens.
3. If the autofocus and flash commander options don't apply to me, are the other features of the d90 that great that it is worth the premium?
I am just really tempted by the d90's prices right now, but I am just as tempted by getting a newer, VR, AF-S, wide angle lens while SAVING over $100. If I had no lenses it would be easy for me to choose the d5000, and if I had very expensive lenses it would be easy for me to choose the d90, but I am right in the middle.
