JorPet & Mishima - Thank you! I appreciate everyone's well wishes. I just can't help but feel a little nervous and empty without my gear handy.

Yeah, not fun, but as I noted it was during inventory, which was the cause of the delay. They said it normally would take 7 business days. Nikon Canadian ships most of its goods through the Vancouver location so they had a lot of work to do.

After what you told me, I'm preparing for the worst so I rescheduled and pushed all my upcoming shoots. Luckily my clients have been understanding...so far. Thank you for the reality check and helping me avoid any embarrassing last minute schedule issues.

Perhaps you can rent a camera for the time that you don't have your's?

Hi Monty! Yeah, I'm thinking of doing that. Just want to get a firm update from Nikon before I start renting equipment.

Did you think about joining Nikon NPS ( Nikon Professional Service ) I was able to get a replacement F4 while mine was being serviced.

NPS requires you to have two pro bodies and several pro lenses, if you don't have that then you cannot even apply.

It's probably smart to join NPS but I only have the D60 & D3s (I do have enough lenses, tho). Not to mention needing a sponsor and tear sheets... Definitely sometime in the future.

I spoke w/Nikon today and my camera will be fixed by tomorrow. Then it's off to QC and I should have my gear back on Monday or Tuesday. It was a power/electrical problem. Basically the thing just died.

Funny thing they say "2 Pro Bodies" however my old Nikon film cameras still count, I own many F2s's,F3AF, F4e, F5, and even my Nikon FTN Apollo funny thing my Nikon D300s is a much better camera than a former D2XS not sure if the D300s is concerned a Pro Body or not in the eyes of Nikon NPS. I also own more old Nikon lenses than Nikon Canada ie. the F3AF 200mm f3.5, 8mm f8 fisheye, 16mm f3.5 labelled "Nikko", 600 f5.6, 800 f8 and many others

I think just the fact that you own so many Nikon/Nikkor gear qualifies you for NPS. You've certainly invested enough to earn entry. ;)

Yeah old Pro bodies count, you just have to have two! From what I saw from the Nikon site, only the D700 and D3 series count as "pro" bodies in the current lineup.

Damn. I guess the FM2 doesn't count then?

In any case, I certainly don't have the portfolio to join anyway. :D

    and the D3x. . .

all the D200/D300s line don't. . .a pity. . .you have to "drop" $2500 x 2 to be considered pro nowadays. . .I mean, I can get away with one body at a shoot/event, but I usually rent 2 since business has been SO DAMN slow and there is just so much saturation in the photography market currently due to the relatively cheap body prices. . .

That is why I said "D3 series," which, at least in my mind means, D3, D3s and D3x...

oops my bad, read too quickly. . .

so if one were to buy a used D2H and D2x (which would total about $1700, price of a D300), could one apply to NPS? technically, they are NPS worthy, no?

    can't wait until a D3 gets to be $1300 . . .

They are not listed as pro bodies on Nikon's website, so I doubt they qualify.

Old film cameras don't count towards NPS membership. The oldest film model they accept is the F5 or at least they use to count the F5 but I'm not sure if they do now. The D200 and up do qualify but remember it's not just "Hey I've got a lot of money so I've just bought two pro bodies and three pro lenses, so I'm automatically in" kind of a thing.

You also have to prove that you are a full-time photographer (they ask to see samples of your work) and you have to submit a letter from your employer or your own "official" letterhead. But before you go and create your own cheesy business logo in MS paint you also have to have a "sponsor" who can "vouch" that you are "legit". Usually your local Nikon authorized dealer who sold you all of your gear or a fellow NPS member can vouch for you.

Oh and basically any of the f2.8 or faster lenses and big zooms will qualify as "pro".

    LOL

Seriously though. Unless I am a pro photog and I need my gear to be fixed right away i don't care about NPS membership. And most likely a pro will have a second body for these kind o situations anyway.

Seeing amateurs or hobbyists having hard ons for a NPS membership is amusing and quite sad. I suppose you use it to impress girsl or models from craigslist or modelmayhem.

    rant over.

PS- Sorry to hear about your gear Nina. hopefully Nikon will fix it quickly.

Perhaps you could try renting a body out for the shoot. It's better to do that than postpone your shoot or lose a client.

Thank you, Poster. Luckily my clients are very cool and they're eager to have me as their photographer so it worked out. :)

    Here's an update/rant on my D3s:

I received a vmail last friday from Nikon cust serv saying my "repairs are ready for pickup". So I went to El Segundo today and they tell me A) only my D60 is ready for p/u. B) My lenses aren't ready, yet, but they will be in if I can just wait. And C) My D3s is still dead.

Apparently they were just finishing up my D3s and when the guy tested it before bringing it out, it died again. Same problem - no juice, doesn't power up. At this point, I'm pretty pissed:

    1) I spent a good chunk of change on this body only to have it die on me after 1 month.
    2) J&R could give a rat's ass about my problem because it exceeded their 30 day return policy (by like a week, I might add).
    3) Nikon cust serv is AWFUL. When I called last week to follow up, nobody knew wth was going on. They had no eta, no status, nothing. And they were impatient and rude.
    4) If the rep who left me the vmail last week said just my D60 was ready, I would have waited for everything else instead of having to drive all the way to El Segundo from the Valley and waiting around for them to finish up the work. Now I have to go back.

I think Nikon should send me a new D3s. I was nice about it before, but now I'm fuming. They had to replace the main board which is what keeps short circuiting. So, not only was the original board faulty, the 2nd one apparently was, too, and now this will be #3 they're putting in. Can you blame me for feeling uncomfortable about the entire situation?

And Nikon's policy is they'll only replace the gear if you bring it in 3x for the same problem. Ok, that's fine, but who's going to pay for my time and gas and time and rental fees and time and lost work???

I don't know what to do at this point...just shut up and take my "repaired" D3s and pray for the best or start really complaining?

I'm so disappointed in Nikon (and J&R for that matter).

    Sorry...end rant.

(P.S. I haven't even blogged about it. I'm tempted to call both of them out for this. Oh, and my friend was "nice" enough to point out that his Canon Mark II 5D was immediately replaced by Samy's Camera & Canon when there was a bubble on his mirror. And this was months after he purchased it. Replaced after the 1st time in service, too.)
