I am coming out of the closet, I have been a long time reader, but this will be my first post. Love the site and people.

It seems that DSLR innovations have slowed down a little now, since the hottest toy from Nikon, D700, is 2-year old. The life cycle seems to be getting a little longer. D3000, D60 and D40 to me are pretty much the same. The “bad news” is that the prices on used items seem to held up much longer than the past.

My question is that when we will see used D700 at $1500 and $1000. I am sure it is a question of “when” instead of “if”. It is god send, but it is still a digital camera after all, which is the probably the worst investment along with PC’s, even worse than the US stock market.

Well that's a easy question to answer.

When the D800 is released.

Slightly OT - "even worse than the US stock market." but I don't agree with this, stocks have always been a great way to make money if you know what to look for, good profit reports, new products or discoveries. Don't listen to Ken (See latest blog post) he hasn't got a clue.

I doubt you'll see a used D700 for under $2000 until a replacement has been out for a year or two.

That is my worst fear.

"Stock market" That is just sarcastic side of me. My 401k is in stocks instead of Nikon 28MM f/1.4.

The D300 dropped to the $1000-$1200 once the D300s came out so when the refreshed D700 comes out look for the original to drop accordingly. The latest on the D700 refresh (which might just be the most highly anticipated digital camera in history for some reason) says not until next summer or even September's PMA event.

Well, as a reference, the D200 has been out 5 years and now a used one is about half its original MSRP. So I'd guess the D700 would be half its original MSRP ($1500) in 2013.

I buy & sell used Nikon all day long - every day. Here's the deal:

New Nikon D700 (best legitimate price) is about $2429 with all original accessories & Nikon USA waranty.
70% of that is $1700 - and that's what a used D700 should sell for. BUT, there is a HUGE demand for them, and that makes for a slightly higher used retail sale price - about $1799 to $1829. And, believe it or not, some can even go higher if they have very low actuation counts.
As soon as the D700 replacement is announced (and I hear rumors that it may or MAY NOT be announced later this year), many will sell their D700 bodies in anticipation. They will be looking for prices near today's $1799 - but it won't happen. Supply will then be higher than demand, and we will see prices fall to the $1600 area. Once the replacement camera arrives, even more photographers will make the upgrade, and D700 prices should drop a little further in the $1500 range.
Of course, this is all just speculation. But, I've seen it before. The D700 is a wonderful camera, and I suspect that the value will not fall dramatically like the D200. I expect normal price drops, like described above.

Excellent post Burke Seim I agree with you, but I think 2010 will be silent with regards to a D700 refresh. For many people the D700 is like the F100 or the F5 and it might just be a keeper for a long time unless Nikon changes their sensor, which has been rumored even on this forum before.

I don't think the price of D700 will drop very fast either. The main reason is that we kind of hit a plateau in term of DSLR advancement. The D700 replacement will not be light year ahead of current D700. In order for D700 to drop further, D90 line has to be really good, too. If not, the price of D90 line will act as a support for used D700 price.

I think it's anticipated because there's enough history now that everyone "knows" what features it's going to have—each thinks it will be exactly what they need (including me). ;-)

I think it's anticipated because there's enough history now that everyone "knows" what features it's going to have—each thinks it will be exactly what they need (including me). ;-)

The anticipation is because people want to see one of the beat cameras get better. Upgrading the D700 isn't just polishing a turd (canon rebel anyone?) but it is about upping image size and making Iso performance better, It's about adding that 1080p video to use with your nikkor lenses, It's about going to 8fps because you need a smaller ff sports shooter to use as a backup... This upgrade, if successful sounds like a dream camera.
